A welfare check has turned into a homicide case after a 72-year-old woman apparently was struck by gunfire while she was in bed.

At about 6:45 p.m. Aug. 7, Oklahoma City police were called to check on Kathleen Cade in the 4000  block of NW 36.

Officers found Cade in bed with a head wound. She was taken by ambulance to an area hospital to be treated for a laceration.

After an evaluation, hospital staff told police that Cade’s injury was a gunshot wound.

Investigators believe Cade was struck by a stray bullet while she was in bed in the early morning of Aug. 7. The round likely entered her room from NW 36, police said.

In the hospital at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Cade died from her injury.

Her death has been ruled a homicide. No arrests have been made. The investigation is in its early stages.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Homicide Tip Line at 405-297-1200.
