While most pet adoption campaigns let you pick a dog or cat, Saturday's Clear the Shelters event in Oklahoma City will also feature rodents and horses you can bring home.

Oklahoma City Animal Welfare is partnering with Horse and Hounds, Nexus Equine and ASPCA to offer low-cost and waived adoption fees as part of the nationwide Clear the Shelters pet adoption campaign.

The daylong event also features food trucks, drinks and giveaways.

Nexus President and CEO Rita Hoch told The Oklahoman that everyone is encouraged to come meet the horses and learn about their organization. During the event, horse adoption fees will vary, and Hoch said they make it a priority to ensure the horses are a great fit for the adopters.

Along with horses from Nexus Equine, the ASPCA’s Equine Transition and Adoption Center (ETAC) will be hosting a selection of horses who will be available for adoption. ETAC is dedicated to ensuring the welfare of all equines and has worked to increase horse adoption in the United States through the ASPCA Right Horse program.

Walk with a shelter dog Saturday morning

The festivities begin at 9:30 a.m., when you can take a shelter dog on its morning walk. The adoption event starts at noon.

All adoptions are on a first-come, first-served basis, and hundreds of pets are available.

To help alleviate overpopulation at OKC Animal Welfare, all dog and cat adoption fees will be waived. Every dog and cat adopted at OKCAW will be spayed or neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. Adopters only need to bring a form of identification to adopt a pet.
