A man and a woman have been accused of trying to murder the woman’s former boyfriend early on Aug. 10 in Northeast Portland. Lucas Prias-Kern, 29, was arrested Monday on charges that include second-degree attempted murder, unlawful use of a weapon and two assault charges. His girlfriend, Stephanie Avalos, 36, was arrested Thursday on the same charges, according to court documents. Avalos pleaded not guilty to the charges Friday.

Skull found in Skamania County believed to be remains of Beaverton hiker missing since 2013
A human skull found in eastern Skamania County earlier this month is believed to be the remains of a 31-year-old Beaverton hiker who went missing in 2013. The remains are believed to belong to Kristopher Zitzewitz. He got separated from his hiking partner 11 years ago near the Big Lava Beds area and vanished. He wasn’t located in several search efforts. Authorities haven’t confirmed the remains belong to Zitzewitz, but a Facebook page dedicated to his memory believes it’s him.

Free at-home COVID tests return starting next month
On the heels of a summer wave of COVID-19 cases, Americans will be able to get free virus test kits mailed to their homes, starting in late September. U.S. households will be able to order up to four COVID-19 nasal swab tests when the federal program reopens, according to the website, COVIDtests.gov. The U.S. Health and Human Services agency that oversees the testing has not announced an exact date for ordering to begin.
