Portland Opera’s world premiere of ‘Shizue’: A Japanese American story that must be told
During World War II, following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, more than 120,000 Japanese Americans were forcibly sent to prison camps that were primarily located in the western part of the United States. The incarceration included Oregonians who lost their homes and businesses. The plight of these people has been covered in literature and film, but it has not been touched by opera until now.
Readers respond: Create wealth to grow the pie
For better or worse, former President Donald Trump’s approach has been to propose policies that focus on increasing our national wealth while Vice President Kamala Harris’ emphasis is to redistribute it. As any good economist knows, wealth isn’t a zero-sum game. Grow the pie – don’t divide it.

NW Natural has been emailing customers to forward public comments to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality about proposed environmental regulation. A web form to collect comment provides boilerplate text that supports the company’s position, which one can only edit by clicking a “customize” link. This comes against a backdrop of NW Natural marketing that bangs on about conservation and renewable sources such as biogas.

Readers respond: Natural gas withdrawal needs longer term plan
Regarding the article suggesting that NW Natural oversold its efforts to go green, the limited availability of renewable natural gas is no secret to the industry, (“NW Natural said it was going green. It sells as much fossil fuel as before,” Sept. 13). Yet supply isn’t the only issue—the cost of renewable gas is significantly higher than the price for natural gas. Hydrogen is a less supply-constrained option that NW Natural is exploring, but it is similarly expensive. At those prices, complete conversion to renewable gas – even if possible – would cause most consumers to switch to other forms of energy of their own accord.
