    Perquimans beats Camden 30-14 to go 2-0 on season

    CAMDEN — The Perquimans Pirates defeated Camden County High School 30-14 on Thursday, Aug. 29, to win their second game of the young 2024 season.

    The victory in the non-conference matchup ended the Pirates’ three-game road losing streak that dated back to last season.

    The Pirates outgained the Bruins 452 yards to 263, picking up 153 yards on the ground and 299 through the air. The Bruins had 112 yards on the ground and 151 through the air.

    Senior quarterback Braylon Knapp was the Pirates’ offensive leader, despite throwing three interceptions. Knapp completed 11 of 20 passes for 299 yards and one touchdown. He also was the Pirates’ rushing leader, picking up 52 yards on six carries.

    Senior Jalynn Nelson was the Pirates’ second-leading ball carrier. He garnered 36 yards on five carries and also scored a touchdown.

    Senior D. Morningstar gained 51 yards on five carries while junior Ataviyon White picked up 27 yards on two carries. White also scored a touchdown.

    Junior Benjamin Brown was Knapp’s favorite target in the game. He hauled in six catches for 168 yards and one touchdown. Morningstar had two catches for 59 yards while senior Maddux Thach also had two catches for 57 yards.

    Sophomore Steven Elliott scored the Pirates’ only other touchdown, scampering 60 yards after a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

    The Pirates also converted three two-point conversions after touchdowns. Nelson, Thach and Knapp had one two-point conversion apiece.

    Nelson led the Pirates on defense with six solo tackles and four assisted tackles. Elliott had five tackles and two assists while White and senior Sean Saunders each had three tackles and four assists. Sophomore Ke’shon Foreman had four tackles and two assists and senior Jacob Askew had two tackles and three assists.

    Besides his seven tackles, Elliott also sacked the Bruins’ quarterback twice. Junior Jamarion Britt also had a sack.

    For the Bruins, junior quarterback Owen Collins completed 12 of 21 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown. He also fumbled once. Because of the Pirate sacks, Collins had a negative 24 yards on six rushing attempts.

    Senior Kevin Dredden garnered 79 yards on five carries and scored one touchdown. Senior Cam Sylvester also gained 45 yards on seven carries.

    Senior Lewin Cooper led the Bruin receivers with five catches for 46 yards and one touchdown. Xzavior Wiggins had three catches for 51 yards while freshman Kaiden Sutton had three catches for 41 yards.

    Junior kicker Wyatt Werderman converted on both of his point-after-touchdown kicks.

    On defense, junior Chase Jopp had five tackles and two assisted tackles; senior Jyveon Harris had four tackles and two assists; Dredden had three tackles and three assists; freshman Danny Defilippo had three tackles and two assists; and sophomore Javon Riddick had two tackles and two assists; and senior Cam Sylvester had one tackle and three assists.

    Three other Bruins had at least three tackles and nine others had at least one tackle or an assisted tackle.

    The Bruins also sacked Knapp five times: Harris got to him twice; Jopp, Collins and freshman Logan Bailey each sacked him once. Lewin also intercepted Knapp twice.

    The Pirates were scheduled to square off against 1-1 Pasquotank County High School at home Friday night in another non-conference game. The Bruins were idle Friday night.
