Bleacher Report algorithm got it right
Those who know, know that the content you see on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, is primarily content you spend the most time looking at. They utilize an algorithm to show you what they believe you will be most likely to look at the longest. A review of my Bleacher Report headlines early this morning makes it clear they do the same thing. It informs me right away...
Dowdle paints new downtown Hertford mural
For Max Dowdle, a windowless, blank brick wall is like the proverbial half-full glass of water. What you have depends on how you look at it. Instead of an eyesore, Dowdle sees a blank canvas with all sorts of wildlife just waiting to appear. Dowdle put his artistic skills to work last week, starting work on a mural on a gray brick wall at the corner of Church and Grubb...
Perquimans schools to get $300K in grants
The Perquimans County Schools has received two grants totaling nearly $300,000 that officials say will improve schools’ ability to detect weapons on campus and construct a new greenhouse facility at the high school. School officials discussed the $186,500 grant from the N.C. Department of Public Instruction’s Center for Safer Schools and a $98,797 Career and Technical Education agriculture grant during a recent joint work session of the Perquimans Board of Commissioners and Board of Education. ...
Hertford breaks ground for new Public Works building
Town of Hertford officials and public works employees gathered last week to break ground for the town’s new public works building on Meads Circle. Work started Monday on the 60-foot by 200-foot metal building that will be constructed south of the town’s wastewater treatment plant, according to Town Manager Janice Cole. Cole previously said the new structure is needed because Hertford Public Works’ current building is in terrible shape and...

Throckmorton column: The seven sins that God hates
“These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, an heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies and he that soweth discord among brethren.” — Proverbs 6:16-19. The book of Proverbs notes 14 types of people and actions that God hates: violent people; the seven things listed above; the sacrifice of the wicked; the way of...
Baccus signs to play softball at Chowan
Perquimans County High School senior Morgan Baccus recently signed her letter of intent to attend Chowan University where she plans to play softball for the Hawks. Baccus started playing softball when she was just 4 years old, participating in T-ball. Her favorite part about playing softball, she says, is the adrenaline rush she gets from the competition. She also enjoys the relationships and friendships she’s made playing the sport. Baccus...
'Betsy's Ride' during Revolution remembered in Hertford
The town of Hertford is staking a unique historical claim for its role at a critical turning point of the Revolutionary War. Everyone knows about Paul Revere’s Ride to Lexington and Concord. He warned the militia of a British attack that triggered the “shot heard ‘round the world.” But now, the courage of a lone young woman who risked her life by riding her horse to warn Colonial troops of...
Worthington column: Left promotes myth about school library ‘book bans’
There are absolutely no “book bans” in the U.S., contrary to claims by liberals such as Cynthia Tucker, whose column on the subject appeared in this newspaper last week. However, there are controversies about placing sexually explicit books in school libraries or in the children’s sections of public libraries. And some parents do not want their children to be required to read books that include scenes of incest and sexual abuse such as “The Bluest Eye” by Toni Morrison or “Push” by Sapphire. But the...
Davis: Ag's high-paying jobs can stem youth flight
GATES — Congressman Don Davis, D-N.C., last week discussed during a town hall the important role agriculture can play in creating the well-paying jobs that will convince more young people to stay and work in their own communities. “I want to be clear I have the understanding and belief that there is nothing like being on the ground and seeing it for yourself,” Davis told the 40 residents gathered in the auditorium at Gates County High School for a town hall on April 4. “I...

History for Lunch: OBX flat top homes part of Stick's legacy
ELIZABETH CITY — Frank Stick was an artist when he arrived on the North Carolina Outer Banks in the 1920s. Today, however, he’s best known as one of the developers who helped turn the once remote barrier islands into the tourist mecca that now draws millions of visitors each year. Stick is also known for creating what’s known as the “flat top” home on the Outer Banks, and that creation was the subject of April 3rd’s “History for Lunch” program at Museum of the Albemarle...
Smith column: Why pedophiles seek 'religious cover.' Why churches give it
Should we take for granted that our children are inherently safe among fellow professing Christians? Consider these facts that underscore the importance of remaining vigilant within church settings when it comes to protecting children from child sexual abuse and supporting abuse survivors. Ninety-three percent of male sex offenders described themselves as “religious,” according to a 2002 study by Dr. Gene A. Abel and Nora Harlow. Sex offenders who are significantly...
Hartman column: Jesus' resurrection provides believers with confidence
Following Jesus’ arrest in Matthew 26:56, all of His disciples fled the scene. At a distance, John and Peter secretly followed the group that had arrested Jesus; Peter ended up denying that he knew Jesus and went away in great grief. John was the only one present of the 12 at Jesus’ crucifixion. Since the crucifixion, it seems that Jesus’ closest followers have been in hiding. In John 20:19-21 and John 20:26-29, the resurrected Jesus appears to the 11 remaining disciples. What Jesus communicates through...
More important than ever to not show partiality
My best friend is a Duke fan. He worships a blue devil and I still love him like a brother. It’s not always easy but he’s married to an N.C. State fan so I know his suffering is greater than mine. He texts me while watching the Duke versus UConn women’s basketball game and expresses his disappointment that the announcer, not someone in studio providing analysis from another state, but the person actually calling the game, expressed her desire to see a UConn and Southern...
Orr column: Casserole with artichokes perfect for spring gatherings
Casseroles are a comforting food. These covered dishes are served at many a family gathering and are a mainstay at church halls. Often quick to throw together using common pantry staples, a casserole can feed a crowd in a pinch. Casseroles are not just an iconic American comfort food. The name is actually derived from the French word “casse” for pan, as the dish has been known as a one-pot meal for thousands of years. ...
