Hoggard column: Young, rich and influential won't get you into heaven
There is a story that I’ve heard a hundred times about Jesus’ conversation with a man identified by three adjectives. We know that all people have worth and God loves them, yet we are all human enough to realize some things are better than others. The man was described as rich, young, influential ruler. Give any caveat you want to place here: everyone would trade their old, tired bodies for their earlier version with so much health and potential. If you were given the choice...
Christian ethics and decision making
“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him, there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” — 1 John 1:5-7 As Christians, we acknowledge God...
D.G. Martin: Best day of year? When Medicare Advantage ads cease
What is the best day in December? Christmas? Maybe. Hanukkah? Could be, beginning Dec. 7 and continuing through Dec. 15. But for this year, for me, it was Dec. 7, the last day to sign up for or change your Medicare Advantage plan. And, more importantly, it was the day the TV ads featuring various...
Audit: County took in $1.8M more in revenues than spent
Perquimans County’s took in more than $1.8 million in revenues than it spent in the fiscal year that ended June 30, nearly doubling the county’s unassigned fund balance to more than $8 million. Those were a few of the takeaways from the 2022-23 fiscal year audit of Perquimans’ finances performed by the county’s outside auditing firm, Thompson, Price, Scott & Adams of Wilmington. Austin Eubanks, audit manager with Thompson, Price,...
Changes keep coming to college football
The evolution of college football continues as we have officially entered the hot transfer holiday season. It’s like hot girl summer or cuffing season, but for Heisman hopefuls. The movement thus far has been fast and plentiful. You may have noticed that all of the Heisman Trophy finalists this season were transfers. None of them were playing college football at the same university they committed to out of high school....
Hartman column: Overwhelming joy of Christmas is being united with God
Joy to the world, the Lord is come! He certainly has come, and we are assuredly in the season that recalls His advent and birth. We sing about great joy and hear a lot about Christmas joy, but perhaps joy feels more like a grand ideal and less like a reality. The prophet Isaiah lived in a time not unlike ours. There was a lot of political unrest, people living for themselves, and the kingdom was divided; yet, amid everything that could have stolen his...
Albemarle Neighbor: Newinghams gear up for annual sale at Christian Book Seller
Each Christmas Eve, Christian Book Seller co-owner Heather Newingham and her family look forward to sharing the joy of the season with their customers. This year will be a little different, however. Because Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday, and the business is closed on Sundays, the Newinghams plan to host their annual holiday festivities at the store a day early — on Saturday, Dec. 23. ...
Change of leadership: New mayors, councilors sworn in
Hertford and Winfall both saw changes in leadership Monday night. In Hertford, Ashley Hodges was sworn in as the town’s new mayor and Keith Rouse and Rhonda Waters took their oath of office as new members of Town Council. In Winfall, Preston White was sworn in as the town’s new mayor and Cynthia Gale White Cunningham and Arnetta Ormond were sworn in for four-year terms as town councilors. ...
Worthington column: Orwell didn't intend ‘Newspeak’ to be non-fictional
Many people treat language like a pretzel, twisting the meanings of words to fit whatever narrative they want to create. For example, some politicians and activists are calling for the protection of “reproductive rights,” by which they mean the legal availability of abortion. But abortion is the exact opposite of reproduction, so they really should just say what they mean: the right to terminate pregnancies. And those who hold traditional...
Orr column: Spatchcocking turkey allows even browning, shorter cook time
Holidays often center around merriment, fellowship, and, of course, food. The sights and scents of the season fill the air and our spirits with good will. Many families have time-honored holiday traditions. Those fortunate often enjoy turkey, ham, or rib roast as they gather with family or friends. Or if celebrating alone a roasted turkey breast or ham steak can be the center of a delightful meal. Although I normally...

School Foundation gets $45K grant to renew HELP program
The Perquimans County Schools Foundation has received grant funding to continue for another year a program that helps the families of Perquimans County Schools students connect with the resources offered by community nonprofits, churches and others. The foundation received word last week that it will again receive $45,000 from the HCWGMW Donor Advised Fund, which focuses on projects and programs that address poverty, homelessness and education. The foundation plans to use the grant for its initiative called Helping Everyone Live Productively, or HELP. ...
Hodges believes Hertford is a town on the rise
New Mayor Ashley Hodges says a lot of good things are happening in Hertford and his vision for the next four years is to keep that trend going. Hodges and Hertford’s Town Council which includes two new councilors — Keith Rouse and Rhonda Waters — began their new terms Monday night. Hodges, a former Hertford town councilor, defeated first-time candidate Reginald White 313 votes to 192 votes, or 61.61% to...
Museum column: Rodanthe gears up for Old Christmas, Old Buck's return
The saying, “Christmas comes but once a year” doesn’t apply to the small village of Rodanthe on Hatteras Island. This tiny hamlet rings in the holiday twice — first with the traditional Christmas celebration on Dec. 25, and again on Jan. 6, known as Old Christmas. How did this Outer Banks village come to celebrate two Christmases? The answer to that question reaches back through the centuries. ...
'The Red Wagon,' Part 3 — Winter
Author’s note: This is the third of four installments of “The Red Wagon,” a Winter’s tale. WinterTrolls think important thoughts and are impatient with children who try to cross their bridges. They dislike the sunlight because they have convinced themselves that such light is corrosive and will turn them into stone — never mind the fact that they’ve been turned to stone for the simple reason that they have turned...
Inner Banks Santa to parents: ‘Let the magic happen’
When Santa Claus says he’ll sit down for an exclusive interview and spring for lunch, don’t turn him down. Arriving for a one-on-one meeting with St. Nick at Edenton’s Herringbone Restaurant, Santa’s car was the first thing that stood out. Yes, Virginia, Santa drives a convertible. “It’s a Buick Cascada,” St. Nick said with a twinkle in his eye. “I like this car. It’s pretty unique. They built it from...
Hartman: 'Peace on Earth' is more than just a holiday greeting
By now, you have conceivably received a holiday card with a message about “Peace on Earth” or “A season of peace.” But you may feel anything but peaceful this season. After all, at the time of my writing, the World Population Review for 2023 records 32 countries are currently at war. There is unrest throughout the world and a growing number of human rights violations both at home and abroad. The times in which we live are anything but peaceful. ...
Worthington column: Why we hunger to be more 'authentic'
Webster’s 2023 Word of the Year is “authentic” based on the number of online searches for its meaning. Users searched for the word in regard to people ranging from politicians to celebrities. Also the advent of AI-generated articles and fake visuals spurred some searches. And the transgender movement has raised questions about the meaning of being authentic. People wear mental masks to hide their authentic self from the world, but...
Throckmorton column: Be intentional loving neighbors, especially at Christmas
Today, as we enter the Christmas season, we listen to beautiful Christmas music and look forward to the lighting of the Advent candles, Christmas presents, great meals, Santa Claus, and family gatherings. Many among us are not as fortunate. These people and families struggle in everyday life and can not afford the worldly luxuries of Christmas. Those with young children face a more difficult time during the Christmas season. Due to deep depression, some commit suicide during the Christmas season. To provide for Christmas, others...
