College football and records you won't believe
You will have to forgive me as I have too many thoughts this week to stick to just one topic. I’ll just have to be more brief than I’d like with each one. For example, two teams with a loss and one team that was caught cheating got into the college football playoff while an undefeated power five team in Florida State was left out. So this is why they are going to twelve teams next year. ...
Orr column: French onion soup traditional starter for Christmas meals
Holidays often make us nostalgic and long for traditions. And when the world is filled with uncertainty and violence, our traditions from a simpler time can be a comfort. Holiday shows, movies, and songs are traditions I look forward to each year. I love "A Charlie Brown Christmas," even though it can only be found on Apple TV, but Apple will stream it for free to all Dec. 16-17. I...

Warm weather and even warmer smiles made Hertford’s annual Grand Illumination Celebration on Friday, Dec. 1, a success. As part of a month-long celebration of the Christmas holiday, Downtown Hertford turned Church Street into a sparkling winter wonderland. Susan Cox, co-chair for the Grand Illumination, filled the event with a host of family-fun activities, including a Santa letter-writing and answer session, a reindeer food fixing station, Christmas song karaoke on...
No stealing this Christmas: About 1,000 view Hertford Christmas Parade
Mr. Grinch got more than he bargained for Saturday during the annual Hertford Christmas Parade. Sheriff’s deputies transported the grumpy, frowning, green character in a jail cell in the back of a pickup truck the entire parade route from Perquimans County High School to downtown Hertford and back. So for roughly an hour, the Grinch had to watch rows of parade-goers giddy with holiday cheer. Roughly 1,000 people witnessed the...
Hertford to use $10K on sculpture, mural as part of arts-focused rebrand

Throckmorton column: Pastors who masquerade as servants
“For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.” — 2 Corinthians 11:13-15. Have you ever watched the musical "Phantom of the Opera" or listened to the soundtrack? A particular chorus to the song, "Masquerade," is quite interesting and begins like this: “Masquerade! Paper faces on parade! Masquerade!...
Tobias column: 'The Red Wagon' — Part 1
Author’s note: This is the first of four installments. It is a winter’s tale about a boy and his dog, a wagon and a bridge, mysterious apples and a troll. Spring Once upon a time, a young man and woman fell in love, got married, and set up house in a pretty little cottage beside a river. ...
Orr column: Cut-out cookies date to English 'mumming' tradition
Downtown Edenton’s homes and shops are sprinkled with twinkling lights, greenery and merriment as the town prepares for its annual Candlelight Tour. Christmas carols fill the air and just the right touch of chill adds the perfect setting. Several customers have commented that visiting our town is just like living in a Hallmark Christmas movie. We all know it’s a little more work than those whimsical Christmas tales depict, and thanks to all the tireless volunteers and workers in our town, the beauty of this...
Northampton's oldest living WWII veteran lives quietly
JACKSON — He lives his days quietly now. John Daniel Carver, known around Northampton County as “J.D.,” still stands over 6 feet tall despite a slightly drooping gait from 101 years of living. “One-hundred-and-one and a half,” he’s quick to point out. Born and raised in Perquimans County near Winfall, Carver moved to the Northampton...
Throckmorton column: Approach each day as a blank page
“So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid, and do not panic before them. For the Lord, your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.” — Deuteronomy 31:6. Aware that he was soon to die, Moses addressed the people, preparing them for his departure. He wanted them to depend on God for spiritual growth, not necessarily on their leaders. God is...

Maybe you are already looking...

Not sure what's wrong with Carolina football
Allow me to provide you a behind-the-scenes look into the madness that is my UNC football fandom. What you are about to read is honest and if it seems contradictory at times, know that’s not lost on me. My feelings are emotional, not rational. Maybe you can relate. Something has to change or the Carolina fanbase will lose interest in football. I’m not saying they lose all the fans, but...
