We are writing to clarify information included in recent articles that appeared in the Perquimans Weekly and The Daily Advance concerning the naming of the Perquimans High School track. The misunderstanding appears to stem from the consideration of only one of the two meetings involved with the presentation and request for naming the track during the March 26, 2018, school board meeting and the meeting on April 23, 2018, when the vote was taken. ...

Hoggard column: When God calls, we must, like Isaiah, listen and obey
The prophet Isaiah’s calling story — a stark contrast to the bleak future he prophesied — is revealed in the sixth chapter of his writings. In the first five chapters, he paints a grim picture of Israel’s future, foretelling widespread devastation in the land of Canaan. As a prophet in Jerusalem, he even predicts the destruction of his own home. This must have raised questions among his neighbors, prompting him to explain his calling. ...
God will keep his promise to you
I promise! Do you always keep your promise? With the business of life and having four children, many times I make promises and forget to keep them. It’s not that I don’t wanna keep my promises, nor is it a regret of promising the thing in the first place and hoping my wife or children will forget. It is simply I cannot remember all of the things that I have...

There's an art to being a good teammate
Being somebody’s teammate is an unusual relationship. It’s akin to being family or a coworker if you work in a really high stress environment. The metaphors used by athletes support the comparisons. They talk of family and brotherhood, treating the job like “another day at the office” and battles against opposition in another uniform from a different place. You don’t pick your family, you don’t pick your coworkers and you...

Hertford Council to vote on budget with increases Monday
The only citizen to speak during last week’s public hearing on the town of Hertford’s proposed $7.6 million budget praised the plan — even though it raises the town’s property tax rate and water and electric rates. “Some things I was not particularly happy with but I understood it,” Dara Winslow said, referring to the proposed budget during the May 29th hearing. “If previous councils had been responsible, we wouldn’t be paying increases on utilities to make ends meet. I thought the town manager and...

Orr column: Grilling a great way to enhance vegetables' flavor
With Memorial weekend behind us and summer ahead it’s time to dust off the grill. But for many like me, the grill is best used year-round despite the weather, and for much more than for cooking meats. In the past I have shared recipes for a variety of grilled meals, even grilled pizza. Given the abundance of summer vegetables in season and readily available now, using the grill is a...
Hartman column: Agape love not puffed up, rude, imperious or irritable
We have been considering loving others the way God loves us. This kind of love, in the Greek, is called “agape.” Paul outlines agape love in his letter to the church at Corinth. In I Corinthians 13, Paul, in detail, describes agape love. In my last column, we considered that agape love is patient, kind, does not envy, does not boast, and is not arrogant. Let’s continue to evaluate his...
