Hartman column: Agape love not puffed up, rude, imperious or irritable
We have been considering loving others the way God loves us. This kind of love, in the Greek, is called “agape.” Paul outlines agape love in his letter to the church at Corinth. In I Corinthians 13, Paul, in detail, describes agape love. In my last column, we considered that agape love is patient, kind, does not envy, does not boast, and is not arrogant. Let’s continue to evaluate his...
Seeds of Success participants painting new mural in Hertford
Another mural has been taking shape on the side of Hertford’s Horace Reid Community Center on North Grubb Street, painted by the young people of Seeds of Success. The organization provides kids ages 9-17 with vision-expanding experiences and activities. The mural, designed and coached by artist O’Neal Pullie, is one of many activities Seeds of Success organized this year. Earnell Brown, communications and marketing director of Seeds of Success — and former Hertford mayor — said the program hopes to widen the youngsters’ horizons. ...

Timberwolves 'almost' ruined my column
Minnesota ruined my column. With the Timberwolves down 3-0 and set to play the Mavs this past Tuesday night in the Western Conference Finals, I had mentally formulated my NBA Finals preview and even had parts of it already written. Then Minnesota went and, with no consideration for me and my needs, won game four. I jumped the gun and assumed the NBA Finals had arrived. It was Dallas versus Boston, or was it Boston versus Kyrie? I guess that depended on your perspective. ...
Bagwell column: How filling out FAFSA form can transform your life
As president of College of The Albemarle, I am passionate about our institution’s role in transforming lives and communities. COA serves as the regional education and training center at the heart of the seven counties we serve in northeastern North Carolina. Our mission is to provide “Better Skills. Better Jobs. Better Future.” for every student we serve. A crucial step in this journey is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, and taking advantage of the Next NC Scholarship, which can cover...
Hughes column: Opening her mind to Gospel opened whole new world for Lydia
“One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God.” — Acts 16:14 There are only a few verses about Lydia in the Bible, but we can learn a lot from those few words. She was living in Philippi when Paul encountered her but she is from Thyatira, which is about 300 miles away. Philippi...
Museum of the Albemarle: Old Nags Head lot more remote than today's resort town
It’s almost summertime in Elizabeth City once again, a time when we realize just how lucky we are to live so close to the beach. Summer weekends find many of us heading across the Camden bridge in search of sun, sand and sea. But we’re not the first to seek nearby ocean breezes in the summertime. Nags Head began life as a resort in the 1830s, when a Perquimans County planter built the first summer residence there. Soon other planters in the region followed suit,...
Albemarle Championship: Sellers' 15-under-par wins GPro Tour tourney
Golfer Grant Sellers compiled a total 15-under-par to take home the top purse of $20,000 at this past weekend’s Albemarle Championship at the Sound Golf Links at Albemarle Plantation. The GPro Tour Albemarle Championship was held Thursday through Saturday and featured 40 young golfers from the southeast and one from as far away as Phoenix, Arizona, all competing for shares of a total purse of $46,650. Sellers, who is 25...

Retired chaplain: 'We must ever forget freedom's price'
A retired U.S. Air Force chaplain urged attendees at Perquimans County’s annual Memorial Day ceremony on Monday to never forget “freedom’s price.” Col. Cherri S. Wheeler, who trained approximately 100 chaplains and chaplain assistants and had four combat deployments during her 31-year military career, was the principal speaker at the annual ceremony sponsored by the William Paul Stallings Post #126 and the Reid Louder Post #362 of the American Legion. ...
Hoggard column: Holy Spirit the Godly breath that can rejuvenate your soul
The day the church was born, on Pentecost, there was the sound of a mighty rushing wind. The term used for “wind” is the same for “breath” or “spirit.” Another way to say the Holy Spirit is to say “the Godly breath.” In the Old Testament, the same concept was closer to breath than a spirit or ghost. We mean that we know something is real and has affected us,...
Patrol seeks help ID'ing driver after pedestrian killed in hit-and-run collision
HERTFORD — The N.C. Highway Patrol is asking the public’s help identifying the driver of a vehicle following a hit-and-run collision in Hertford that killed a pedestrian Sunday night. Trooper C. Anderson said the body of Cecil Beasley Jr., 61, of Hertford, was discovered by a passing motorist on West Grubb Street near Don Juan Road, just outside Hertford, at 6:15 a.m. Monday. Two witnesses said they saw Beasley walking...
Tobias column: 'The Lark Ascending' portends tragedy, amplifies hope
I have only one simple goal for this piece. I want to persuade you to listen to, and fall in love with, a short musical piece by Ralph Vaughan Williams, entitled “The Lark Ascending.” Legend has it that the theme of the “The Lark Ascending” came upon the composer as a still, soft voice — the lilting, lifting song of a skylark. The story is that he was standing on a hillside in 1914, gazing upon a fleet of troop carriers embarking from Dover for...
Hertford budget would raise tax rate by 4 cents
Hertford taxpayers will see a 4-cent property tax rate increase and residents will see increases in both their monthly sewer and electric bills if Town Council approves the town manager’s $7.67 million proposed budget for 2024-25. Hertford Town Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing Tuesday on Manager Janice Cole’s budget proposal that raises the town’s property tax rate from a revenue-neutral 48 cents to 52 cents, base monthly sewer charge from $43.70 to $47.02, and base monthly electric service charge from $15 to...
19 restaurants to take part in Dine Out to Help Out fundraiser for Food Bank
Nearly 20 restaurants in six area counties will be participating in next week’s annual Dine Out to Help Out fundraiser for the Food Bank of the Albemarle. Each of the participating restaurants plans to donate a percentage of their sales one day during the week of June 3-9 to support the food bank’s hunger relief programs in 15 area counties. “The funds raised through this hunger-relief initiative will help provide...
Gardner column: Are we seeing end of college as we knew it?
Will 2024-25 be the year of “peak college?” We’ll soon see Vanderbilt University become the first institution to charge more than $100,000 a year. More colleges will follow. Parents are watching college students chant “Death to America” and “We are Hamas” at various campuses. Their children are taking hybrid classes, just like during COVID, and missing graduation ceremonies. ...
The first 8: High school students complete EMT class
Their official high school graduation may still be about a week away, but for seven of the eight Perquimans County High School students who signed up for an EMT class with Perquimans Emergency Services this spring, this week’s EMT class celebration kind of felt like a graduation ceremony, too. According Sheila Twine, a work-based learning coordinator at PCHS, this was the first year that students at the school could sign up for an EMT class with Perquimans Emergency Medical Services. ...
Barkley's NBA days could be nearing an end
I wrote a few weeks ago about the influence of Charles Barkley’s post-playing career on numerous athletes and former athletes in the media and content game. It seems his incredible media career may soon be coming to an end. I doubt this is a newsflash, but I’m not friends with Charles Barkley so everything you read here is speculation based on observations. The biggest of those being that TNT appears to be in a bidding war with NBC over the remaining slice of the NBA’s...
Parker-White column: School board must honor vote to name track for Wiggins
Editor’s note: This column is an open letter addressed to the citizens of Perquimans County. In 2018, the Perquimans County Board of Education voted to name, posthumously, the future track at the Perquimans County Athletic Complex in honor or Capt. M. Shirley Wiggins, USN (Ret.). In anticipation of the track’s March 2024 grand opening celebration, there was a rumor in the community that the track would not be named after...
Throckmorton: Lures, temptations, enticements
There is a multitude of bodies of water covering our planet Earth. I am blessed to live on the Inner Banks of the Albemarle Sound, where most of the water is brackish or fresh, unlike the saltwater of the Atlantic Ocean. Here, you may fish with crab pots, lures, or live bait. There is another type of lure and live bait that hovers on the darker side — the world of prostitution and human trafficking. Human bodies (most often women and children) are used for...
