Throckmorton column: It's OK to live a quiet life
Our day-to-day existence should be all about living to please God. Many folks choose to live a loud, extensive, and famous life. I, on the other hand, desire to live a quiet life. So, there seems to be much resistance around us to prevent quiet living. The Scriptures encourage us to live quietly. “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work...
We must love God with all our heart, soul and 'very'
As Valentine’s Day approaches and our thoughts turn to love, I recall a time I had recently speaking to a group of young people in Wellsburg, Iowa. My only prerequisite was to base our time together around Mark 12:30. In Mark chapter 12, some Pharisees and Sadducees came to debate Jesus. Finally a scribe, who heard Jesus answer them well, asked if Jesus could tell him which commandment was the most important. Jesus said, in Mark 12:30, that we must love God with all our...
Intrigue from the Super Bowl to the All-Star game
I have too many thoughts and topics bouncing around in my brain to only expound on one. This week I’m going to write a little about a lot. I’m old enough to remember Mike Shanahan and Ed McCaffrey winning three Super Bowls together. They won a Super Bowl in San Francisco and two in Denver with Shanahan coaching and McCaffrey playing receiver. Their sons are now in San Francisco -...
DOT seeks OK to open Hertford S-Bridge remotely
The opening and closing of Hertford’s new S Bridge could soon happen by remote control. Currently, N.C. Department of Transportation Bridge Maintenance employees open and close the bridge for vessels too tall to pass under the span by using controls located in the bridge tender’s house located on the bridge. But according to Tim Hass, communications officer for DOT’s Division I, department officials are now waiting for approval from the...
W. Grubb housing project would face key challenges
Hertford Town Council has some definite ideas about what a new housing development on 184 acres near West Grubb Street should look like. For one thing, the houses should be affordable, single-family homes surrounded by open space and trails for public recreation. Also, the project should proceed with as few public dollars invested as possible. But any affordable housing project near West Grubb Street faces some definite challenges, not the...
Hanig: Local Republican representation in Raleigh paying off for northeast NC
Local Republican leadership in the General Assembly is netting positive results for northeastern North Carolina, according to state Sen. Bobby Hanig, R-Currituck. “We’ve never been in a better spot with Republican representation in Raleigh on the House and the Senate side,” said Hanig. “We have strong leadership and we have good conservative values that are really starting to show through.” Hanig represents newly drawn Senate District 1, which includes Bertie,...
Chamber gala: Midgett, Open Door among award winners
The owner of retail clothing store in downtown Hertford and the Winfall-based food pantry were among the award winners at last weekend’s Perquimans County Chamber membership dinner/auction gala. Held at the Crawfish Shack on Saturday, Jan. 27, the Chamber event drew more than 80 members and guests. Georgeanne Midgett, owner of Small Town Trendz locations in both Hertford and Elizabeth City and Harbor Treatz in Elizabeth City, won the Small...
Chasing partisan power no way to attract the 'nones'
No, this article has nothing to do with women monastics in the Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Coptic, or other Christian communities. So there’s nothing about habits, convents, or the cornette worn by Sister Bertrille that took her airborne in the high winds at Convent San Tanco. The “nones,” rather, are those who identify themselves as “religiously unaffiliated” on American religious landscape surveys like the recent ones done by the Pew Research Center and the Public Religion Research Institute. ...
Groups to host voter education session in Hertford, EC
With absentee voting for the March 5 primary election already underway, several nonpartisan groups are joining forces to ensure voters have all the information they need about recent changes to the state’s voting and election rules and redistricting maps. Common Cause, a nonpartisan grassroots organization, and the League of Women Voters Northeastern North Carolina, a nonpartisan organization that encourages informed participation in government, are partnering to provide voter education sessions they’re calling #UniteNC “Ready to Vote” in Pasquotank and Perquimans counties. ...
Comments accepted on conservation plan
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) is inviting the public to review and comment on a draft Virginia Big-Eared Bat Conservation Plan. The Virginia big-eared bat (VBEB) is a federally- and state-listed endangered species found in North Carolina (primarily Avery and Watauga counties), Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky. It was federally listed in 1979 due to habitat loss, vandalism of caves and increased human visitation to maternity roosts and...

The Perquimans girl’s basketball team is once again putting together a banner season. They are currently the fourth-ranked girl’s basketball team in the state in the 1A East standings and have put together a 17-2 record overall as well as a 6-0 record in the Four Rivers Conference. Head coach Aaron Burke — who has been at the helm of the Perquimans girl’s basketball program for the past seven seasons...
Hoggard column: Christmas Eve in a church: Primetime for a miracle
Since moving to Eastern North Carolina, I have, at times, looked at my children and worried about a medical emergency in such a rural place. What if they choke? Have a terrible asthma attack? Fall and hit their head? Each time I’ve had these intrusive thoughts, it’s been followed with, “I hope we’re at church.” May sound a little strange, but if you know this incredible body of believers, you...
Thomas C. Tilley, Sr.
Thomas Crawford Tilley, known affectionately as Tommy, peacefully departed this earthly life on January 19, 2024, at the age of 82. Born in Norfolk, VA on October 25, 1941 to the late Thomas Wesby Tilley and Martha Hofler Tilley, Tommy lived a fulfilling and dedicated life, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. Tommy was a Highway Maintenance Engineer for the North Carolina Department of Transportation and retired after thirty-seven years of service. He later retired after ten years of service as salesman with Piedmont Natural Gas. His commitment and expertise in this field were greatly valued and...
Orr column: Bone-in ham, dried beans best for ham and bean soup
It’s soup season! Time for a comforting bowl of hot soup to warm you when the weather chills your bones. This time of year I like a heartier soup that’s thick and rich and full of veggies, meats, and beans, and can be a meal in itself. An old favorite is ham and bean soup. I like to add the ingredients to my crockpot in the morning and come home to nearly complete dinner. ...
Our blessings are often a path to greater generosity
There is a little poem of unknown authorship that goes: “I got a dozen roses from a friend the other day, but I only have one left, for I gave them all away. I took one to a friend who’s not feeling very well. The flower or the visit, which helped? I could not tell. The rest went to the ones who’ve helped me in many different ways. The roses were so pretty, I just could not keep them all, except one single rosebud, standing beautiful and tall. My friend gave me the flowers to help brighten up my day,...
Sad to see Sports Illustrated go
It’s hard to believe Sports Illustrated has come to an end. There is an argument to be made that the magazine I loved as a kid ceased to exist years ago when the magazine was bought out. Most of the writers, photographers and editors were fired and the publication became trash. Now it’s officially gone and it makes me more sad. You have likely noticed that print media in general...
New school, basin work, 911 towers, broadband upgrades on tap in 2024
Thanks to millions of dollars in state grants and appropriations, Perquimans County residents will see several high-profile infrastructure projects get started in 2024 that are expected to either improve services or help create new jobs. According to Perquimans County Manager Frank Heath, construction of the new intermediate school that will replace Hertford Grammar School and Hertford Middle School is likely to begin this year. Perquimans commissioners bought 80 acres in...
Commissioners OK $300K budget amendment to buy new tax software system
Perquimans officials have approved replacing the county’s decades-old tax software package with new tax software that the county manager says will better meet the needs of the county tax, finance and human resource offices. Commissioners agreed Tuesday, Jan. 16, to a $300,000 budget amendment proposed by County Manager Frank Heath to buy the tax software package offered by Keystone Information Systems. Heath expressed to commissioners the urgency of approving the...
Republicans rally: Robinson speaks at GOP rally in Hertford
HERTFORD — Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson mixed humor with an otherwise fiery address during a campaign stop in Hertford on Saturday, Jan. 20. “I’ve got to use this,” he asked when presented a microphone. “I feel like Richard Pryor holding this.” His opening comments earned him a hearty laugh from at least 100 supporters packed inside the Crawfish Shack off Swing Gate Road. ...
