Martin column: Ukraine may have won — if we don't make them give it up
Arguably, the Ukrainians have already won their country’s battle with Putin’s Russia — if we don’t make them give up that victory. It is a complicated situation, of course. Russian troops are still holding on to Ukrainian territory in the eastern part of the country and are attempting to conquer more. But they are paying a high price. According to Newsweek in a Jan. 8 article by Ellie Cook, “Ukrainian...
Tobias column: Jesus rejected devil's deal for power, glory. Will we?
As a retired clergyman, I don’t preach much anymore. Although some of my readers might sniff and suggest that there’s plenty of that going on in these columns. Notwithstanding, I’ve not written a real homily in a while. And I need to, since I’m teaching homiletics at my seminary this semester. So it’s a good idea that while I’m teaching, I should know what I’m talking about. That is, I...
Hartman column: Like the leper, we must show gratitude for salvation
I once heard a lady recalling an experience from childhood, a time before Thanksgiving, when her mother warned her and her siblings to remain quiet and composed at the kids’ table. The lady’s mother said, “It will not be like last year; you children will not annoy the adults all evening.” The lady remembers observing one of the unattended candles in the kitchen setting the currents on fire at dinner....
Relying on the Lord's strength
Three years ago, my daughter, her husband, and their daughter visited with us during Christmas. Everything went smoothly until the morning of Christmas Eve when my son-in-law complained about not feeling well. Well, things went downhill from there; he got progressively worse and was taken to the emergency department, where it was confirmed he was experiencing appendicitis. He underwent an uneventful emergency surgery and was discharged around midnight on Christmas Eve. ...

Tobias column: Saying you have 'Biblical worldview' doesn't mean you do
In his first public interview after being elected Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Mike Johnson told Fox News’ Sean Hannity: “I am a Bible-believing Christian. Someone asked me today in the media, they said, ‘People are curious, what does Mike Johnson think about any issue under the sun?’ I said, ‘Well, go pick up a Bible off your shelf and read it.’ That’s my worldview.” That’s quite a mouthful. I would have much preferred Mr. Johnson to say that the Bible helps to...
Hoggard column: Remove any obstacle to your becoming a house of prayer
Satan has a way of keeping your eyes on things that don’t matter. How many of us are preoccupied with things happening in the world that have little to do with us? How many of us fear this coming year because of the political scene? In a nation built on the idea that cash is king, despite the words on that cash, “In God, We Trust,” we self-medicate, have got...
