HERTFORD — Perquimans County residents now have a new place to register to vote, file for elective office, and cast their ballot during early voting for elections. The Perquimans Board of Elections has relocated to 333 Winfall Boulevard, which is the former location of Dr. Neil Denunzio’s Perquimans Medical Center. Denunzio retired in April 2020 after serving the community for 35 years. As of noon on Friday, Jan. 5, county...

Perquimans County Emergency Medical Services said in a press release Saturday that the county 911 Center was advised at 12:10 a.m. by a passerby of a possible accident on Drinking Hole Road. When first responders arrived, they found a single vehicle in the roadway that had been occupied by two people. One...
Museum column: Houses built in Minimal Traditional style dot the region
Drive the scenic roads of the Albemarle region and you’ll see hundreds of years of history outside your window. Houses, churches, farm buildings, and commercial structures, built with care by generations of crafters, dot the traditionally rural landscape. Over the centuries, housewrights, joiners, and carpenters intermingled with cabinet and furniture makers to construct homes and businesses throughout the area. Their handiwork followed architectural styles ranging from Postmedieval to Contemporary. When...
Perquimans student suspensions again rose in fall semester
HERTFORD — The number of students suspended in the Perquimans County Schools during the recently completed fall semester was nearly 30 more than suspended in the fall semester the previous year, new data released by the school district shows. Assistant Superintendent James Bunch presented the Perquimans County Schools' 2023-2024 Discipline & Reportable Offense report during last month's Perquimans Board of Education meeting. The report shows the district had 116 total student suspensions from late August through mid-December compared to 89 during the same time period...
Sawin challenging Goodwin in NC's 1st House District
Susan Sawin knows she has an uphill battle to defeat Republican state Rep. Goodwin for the 1st House District seat but the Dare County Democrat said she is ready for the challenge. Sawin and Goodwin, R-Chowan, will face off in November to represent a district that includes Chowan, Perquimans, Currituck, Tyrrell and Washington counties and part of Dare County. Goodwin is running for a fourth term in the House and...
Hartman: How we give God an ever-growing Thanksgiving in New Year
A family once met at their new glass-top dining-room table for New Year’s dinner. The family, very proud of their new table, placed all the hot dishes they had prepared in the center and sat down to eat. No more than five minutes into their meal, there arose a loud pop. The heat from the freshly cooked dishes had split the glass top in two. Now, the delicious dinner lay ruined on the floor. ...
Throckmorton column: Forsaking the Colonial schooling model that made us great
From the mid-1600s until the mid-1800s, public schools as we know them today did not exist. Parents, pastors, and tutors taught children to read, write, cipher, reason, and think using the Bible as their first instruction book. Over these 200 years in our nation’s history, America produced five generations of men and women who laid the foundation for our country. These Americans were dedicated to the principle of liberty and the art of self-government. The most influential voices came from the pulpit. ...
Throckmorton column: Shout to God with cries of joy
“My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips. When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches. Because You have been my help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings, I will rejoice.” — Psalm 63:5-7. There are opinions and commentaries about David and his “obsession” with the Lord his God. I’m not...
Hoggard column: Jesus' quiet entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday
Johnny Carson once asked Mother Teresa on live TV how she handled the accolades from winning the Nobel Peace Prize. She humbly replied, “Do you think, Mr. Carson, for one moment, that that little donkey thought the crowd was giving him the praise and glory instead of Jesus?” The proper view of every successful Christian is that God alone promotes. Jesus’ triumphal entry has a lot of parallels to Luke’s...
A lot has happened in football over the holidays
First and foremost, I hope you had a nice Christmas, an opportunity to share it with someone you care about and that 2024 has been kind to you so far. I have been fighting the funk and/or flu for weeks, but was well enough to go see my family on Christmas and that was a blessing for which I’m grateful. Much has happened in the last few weeks while we...
Area jobless rate edges up to 3.4% in Oct.; workforce in six counties rose by 160
Unemployment in the six-county area edged up by two-tenths of a percent in October to 3.4%, as 82 more people filed claims for jobless benefits than the month before. The N.C. Department of Commerce released county unemployment data late last month showing a total of 1,816 unemployment claims were filed in Pasquotank, Perquimans, Chowan, Currituck, Camden and Gates counties in October. That’s up from from 1,734 filed in September. Five...
Cole: Streetscaping, housing, arts promotion priorities
The town of Hertford has plans for a number of initiatives in 2024 that include streetscaping, additional housing options and promoting the arts. According to Town Manager Janice Cole, the improvements will require some funding assistance from non-town sources. Grants will play a critical role in addressing the town’s infrastructure needs, she said. “We are working now on a streetscaping grant that we got from the (N.C.) Department of Commerce...
Orr column: How to indulge and still keep your New Year's resolution
As we begin a new year we often look toward healthier habits to offset a long overindulgent holiday season. Many make New Year’s resolutions to improve their lifestyle, but these resolutions can come back to haunt you. Although New Year’s resolutions began with ancient Babylonians and Romans making promises to God to better their behavior in the year to come, it is now primarily a Western practice with ties to...
Schools Foundation assets grew almost $1M over decade, awarded $100K in scholarships in 2023
The presentation of 35 scholarships worth a total of $100,000 was among the year’s highlights for the Perquimans County Schools Foundation. In addition, the foundation’s assets have grown by nearly $1 million over the past decade, rising from $165,313 in 2013 to $1,100,308 in 2023. The foundation’s assets first surpassed $1 million in 2022. Carson Stallings, the foundation’s president, addressed the scholarships and other foundation highlights in a recent letter...
Poetic thoughts offer perspective for the new year
To start the new year, I am again sharing some hopeful words from my late friend, Bill Warren, who died at 89 in March 2020. Bill read my columns in Sarasota, Florida, and responded often to share his thoughts. A prolific poet, songwriter and storyteller, Bill reminds me of my father in the way that he left behind so many wonderful thoughts and notes of encouragement. In response to poems...
Worthington column: Democratic Party not acting very democratic
The N.C. State Board of Elections approved ballots for the March 5th primary based on submissions by political parties, and they dismissed a challenge to Donald Trump’s name. The names of 10 Libertarian and seven Republican candidates for president will appear on the ballots for their respective parties. But Joe Biden is the only name which will appear on the ballot for the Democratic presidential primary. The North Carolina Democratic Party stacked the deck in favor of President Biden by keeping the names of other...
Museum of the Albemarle: Wave machine inventors sought easier way to curl hair
The museum has a wide variety of artifacts in our collections, and one of my favorites is the permanent wave machine. Have you ever heard of or seen a permanent wave machine? If not, it’s a hair-curling machine with multiple electrical cords and clamps hanging from a top circular panel, which is an extension of an arm attachment for the main body of the device. In other words, it looks like a medieval torture device. ...
Tobias column: In 12 Days of Christmas, Dec. 25 just starts the feast
Wait! Don’t take down your tree or pull off decorations yet. Christmas isn’t over. No, really, it’s not. In its religious reality, Christmas Day, Dec. 25, is only the beginning of the Christmas Festival, which lasts 12 days until Jan. 5, the Eve of Epiphany. Then it is appropriate to take down the greens and remove the vestiges of the feast. But before we take a look at the Twelve...
We're called to carry light of Christ into the new year
Here we are, just a few days past Christmas. Some may be thinking, “I’m glad it’s over.” Others may be wishing Christmas didn’t have to come to an end. Perhaps others are still attending functions with family and friends through the New Year. Each of us is different, but as I sit in the “afterglow” I realize that the Christmas light never goes out. The fireplace will cool as warmer days approach, the Christmas lights will dim with the New Year’s dawning, and the greenery...
Throckmorton: The true spirit of Christmas
We are now into the 12 days of Christmas, which began on Christmas Day and last until Jan. 6. These twelve days signify the time between Christ’s birth and the Magi’s arrival, known as the Epiphany. Epiphany is a time of revelation. Jesus revealed himself to the Israelites and the Gentiles, represented by the Wise Men. God does not play favorites but receives all whose hearts long for Him. The Angel Gabriel first appeared to Zechariah and then to Mary, telling them of the upcoming...
