DeWald is county Extension's new 4-H agent
Perquimans County Cooperative Extension’s new 4-H agent is someone who benefited from the program while in school herself. “I was a member of 4-H throughout my childhood, so I can personally attest to the benefits of getting involved,” said Tori DeWald, who recently was introduced as the county’s new 4-H agent. “My 4-H club leader was, and still is, a phenomenal role model for me. DeWald started work with the...

She's a Spartan: Perquimans’ Riddick signs with Norfolk State
Perquimans High senior softball player Bristyl Riddick says she chose Norfolk State University as the school to spend her collegiate career after the Spartans satisfied a trio of criteria. Riddick, 17, said the Spartans’ coaching staff was the main reason she signed with Norfolk State, which is located in Norfolk, Virginia. The other two reasons included opportunities to fulfill a lifelong dream of playing Division I softball and to play close to home so her parents can see her play. ...

Hoggard: Thanking those who played big roles in my own story
Gratitude is the act of worship by remembering what God has done. Counting our blessings is a spiritual exercise that blesses every person. Telling the great stories of God to the next generation is a responsibility outlined for us in the poetic books of the Word. Telling your story may be the most powerful thing you ever do with your family. I want to briefly mention a few people who...
Letter: Perquimans first responders acted quickly in emergency
On the evening of Nov. 9, I attended an art reception in memory of Hertford’s famed artist, Jack Pardue, at the Perquimans Arts League, in downtown Hertford. One of the attendees, a dear friend, fainted and had what appeared to be a medical event. I called Perquimans County Emergency Services. They answered immediately and required me to stay on the phone until the first responders arrived. ...
Gardner column: Johnson adds just enough ‘right rudder’ as speaker
Pilots of single-engine airplanes know that when power is applied upon takeoff the clockwise motion of the propeller has a tendency to pull the plane left. To counteract this leftward drift and keep the plane on the runway center line, the pilot must apply right rudder and right aileron. This seems an apt analogy for the trend of government to get larger, costlier and more intrusive. Trillion-dollar deficits stretch as...
Hartman column: Choose thanksgiving, even when it feels impossible
The Psalms contain many of David’s most ardent thanksgiving stanzas, but 1 Chronicles 16:8-36 records one of my all-time favorites. David celebrates with abundant fanfare; the Ark of the Covenant finally arrives in Jerusalem. David provides a “thanksgiving” feast for each man and woman in Israel —a day of thanksgiving in God’s presence. Amid their celebration, David appoints thanksgiving to be sung unto God. This beautiful refrain of gratitude contains themes and thoughts we can apply to our contemporary Thanksgiving Day. However, it is only...
Throckmorton column: Daddy's Bible has faded, but Jesus' words still blaze
My daddy, James Bernice Watson, was born Sept. 24, 1889, and died June 8, 1962. I was 19 years old when he passed away at the age of 73. I inherited my daddy’s Bible from my mother after she passed away. It is not as heavy or oversized as I remembered as a child. Even before I learned to read, I would study the pages and wonder at the pencil marks in the margins that Daddy put there. I was intrigued by some of the...
Orr column: Mazur's chicken paprikash staple for a 4th generation
The streets in downtown Edenton are decked with greenery and lights and it’s really beginning to look a lot like Christmas now. I encourage you to support all of our local businesses as we head full swing into the holiday season. After enjoying a stroll downtown for Black Friday and Small Business Saturday you may be looking for a nice cozy meal to serve family and friends after a day of shopping. ...
Tobias: Advent perfect season to practice the 'adulting of peace'
Adulting is a neologism. It was invented in the 2010s on social media, used by millennials to describe doing responsible but unexciting tasks. Like paying bills, mowing the lawn, acting like a grownup. A Big Apple young adult who goes by the Twitter handle “unholytwerp” described “adulting” as “Keeping the job. Feeding the family. Educating the kids. Buying the stuff.” Other millennials (who are likely to call me a “boomer”)...
Things for which I am thankful
It’s time for Thanksgiving, which is always a great reason to stop and actually give thanks. I have a lot to be thankful for. I have friends and family I love. I don’t have a lot of either, but I love them dearly and I have no doubt they love me back. I have a job and health. Neither are perfect, but they could also both be far, far worse...
Extension: Arboretum neat place to get fresh air, learn about trees
The return to Standard Time from Daylight Savings time can change up our routine as it does each November. People find themselves arriving home after work or school with very little sunlight left in the day. Therefore, many folks may be looking for ways to incorporate sunshine and fresh air into their regular days. There are many opportunities and locations for this around our local community, including the newly updated...
Turkey Drop: Drive provides Thanksgiving for less-fortunate
Area residents dropped off 264 turkeys and more than 1,500 pounds of food at this past weekend’s Turkey Drop to help their less-fortunate neighbors have a more enjoyable Thanksgiving. The Turkey Drop was the 10th annual food-collection event organized by The Open Door Food Pantry of Perquimans County. Over two days, Friday and Saturday, residents pulled into the parking lot at Hertford United Methodist Church on Dobbs Street in Hertford and dropped off either frozen turkeys and Thanksgiving meal fixins’ or monetary donations. In some...

Hertford officials are taking more time to consider a request to rezone property off Don Juan Road from commercial use to residential single-family housing. Town Council’s decision to table a developer’s request to rezone the property followed a lengthy discussion between council members and civil engineer Joe Anlauf, who was attending on the developer’s behalf.
