Dean Smith was great coach, better man
My son's middle name is Dean. I want to share with you a story I heard recently about the man he was named after. I believe it epitomized the kind of man he was and serves as a reminder that we could all do better. Current TNT analyst and former NBA and UNC stand out Kenny Smith was on the “All The Smoke” podcast when he was asked about his college coach, Dean Smith. I strongly encourage you to watch the clip on YouTube, if...

Throckmorton: Why being poor in spirit is important
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 5:3 That is the first of the Beatitudes, specifically the eight characters that represent the principal graces of a Christian. One definition of beatitude is “heavenly happiness.” Another is “bliss: extreme happiness and serenity.” So, the word beatitude could be substituted for the word happiness. ...

Throckmorton column: Keeping community safe not just a police responsibility
Most citizens believe that it is the responsibility of the police to keep their neighborhoods safe. They do not understand that citizens and the police both have active roles in ensuring a safe community. Citizens can be their neighborhood’s eyes and ears, while their town’s police officers are responsible for enforcement actions and other services to the community. An active neighborhood watch is a must. In larger police departments, a...
Local courts going to electronic records system in February
Area counties will transition to searchable electronic court records — and electronic filing of court documents by attorneys — early next year. Courts in 12 North Carolina counties — including the District 1 counties of Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Pasquotank and Perquimans — are upgrading to a new digital case management system on Feb. 5. The counties are listed by state court officials as “Track 3” of the statewide implementation. ...
Throckmorton column: Carrying the light of Christ
“For You cause my lamp to be lighted and to shine; the Lord, my God, illumines my darkness.” — Psalm 18:28 Psalm 18 is the song of gratitude David sang to the Lord when God delivered him from the hand of both his enemies and Saul. It is a song of gratitude for deliverance and victory. Psalm 119 is the longest Psalm and the longest chapter in the Bible. It...
Letter: Show you appreciate vets, turn your porch light green
Veterans Day is Nov. 11th every year. It commemorates the end of World War 1 on the 11th hour of the 11th day of November 1918 when Germany surrendered to the allied forces in Europe. This has always been a special day for veterans who get together with other veterans and talk about their time in the military — from basic training to advanced individual training, and then old war stories. For veterans, it feels good to talk to others who have all been through...
Hartman column: In God's hands, what seems impossible becomes abundant
Once, a man saved for years to buy a boarding pass on a cruise ship. He was excited but suddenly overwhelmed with fear. He used all his money for the boarding pass. He had no extra for food. He thought, “What will I do for food?” He remembered a hoop of cheese stored in his cellar: “If I’m careful, I will have enough cheese for the week,” he thought. He disappeared at mealtime for the first few days aboard the ship and carefully rationed his...
Too many sports cutting into ‘fanwidth’
“Fanwidth” is a term I stole from producer Mike Ryan Ruiz of the Dan Lebatard Show with Stugotz and if you are a sports fan, yours is likely being tested right now. Fanwidth describes your ability to consume multiple sports and, as I write this, there are a lot more viewing options than there are hours available to me for viewing. I’m having to pick and choose. The World Series...
