Throckmorton: 'God, Give Us Christian Homes' a hymn to live, worship by
Today, many churches have disregarded the Godly messages contained in the beautiful hymns and the Word of God. These churches are eliminating pulpits and turning them into stages for entertainers who have no concept of the message of baptism or bringing people to Christ. Where is your church today? I have been told by a visitor that a church they visited reminded them of a “Honky Tonk” on a Saturday night, and they had no plans to go back. ...
Big changes making Miami Dolphins better
The Miami Dolphins are leading the league in passing yards per game. That’s impressive for any team and exciting for any fanbase. As a lifelong Dolphins fan, trust me when I tell you we’re excited our team is worthy of discussion. We could break down the kind of change required for a team with a historically bad offensive line last season to do what is required to provide time for...

More than $120,000 to support education in Perquimans County has been raised in memory of Collin “Snap” Winslow, a Perquimans County High School student who died in a hunting accident last spring. Mayor: Hertford has come a long way in past four years
It is an honor and a privilege to have been the face of Hertford and a member of an outstanding Hertford Town Council. However, for personal reasons I am not seeking a second term as mayor. The past four years have been a challenge. However, they’ve been equally rewarding, and for that I am grateful. As I reflect upon my tenure as mayor, we accomplished much and attempted to engage all Hertford residents. We ceased to manage your town in an ad hoc manner, but...

EDENTON — Retired U.S. Army combat commander and Edenton resident Laurie Buckhout announced Monday morning she is seeking the Republican nomination for Congress in the 1st Congressional District. Buckhout also announced that she is contributing $1 million of her own money to her campaign. Buckhout joins what is expected to a crowded GOP field trying to unseat incumbent Congressman Don Davis, a Democrat who was elected to the 19-county seat...

Harvest Festival? Costumes? What's biblical thing to do?
The following are questions I am often asked in October: “My church holds a harvest festival on or near Halloween which incorporates costumes. Is this biblical?” “I hand out tracts that share my faith along with candy on Halloween. Is this biblical?” “I dress as biblical characters or in non-scary costumes at Halloween. Is this...
Hartman: Don't despair non-believers' rejection; Jesus will lead you
In my last column, we considered a man who was disabled for 38 years. In John 5:1-9, Jesus healed and told him to pick up his bed and walk on the Sabbath. The man followed Jesus’ command. I can imagine the testimony that this man’s life would become. Scripture doesn’t say, but imagine everywhere he went, his walk alone was a testimony to the goodness of God. Continuing in John...
Starting to relax and enjoy UNC football
It’s time to talk about the Tar Heels. No, this isn’t a basketball season preview column. This is about Carolina football. As I write this, UNC is ranked 12th in the AP poll. That’s right behind Alabama, USC and Texas. The last time North Carolina started a football season 5-0, the New York Times hadn’t yet published in color. If I seem excited about my favorite team, that’s why. It’s...

A local attorney who defended a North Carolina man convicted last month for his role in the attack on the U.S. Capitol Building on Jan. 6, 2021, believes a federal jury got it wrong. Stephen Horn, who lives outside of Raleigh, was convicted of four misdemeanors for his role in the attack on the U.S. Capitol despite his claim that he was acting as an independent journalist on the day of the attack. ...

Perquimans County Sheriff Shelby White told Hertford officials Monday that he needs two more deputies in order to provide the town a full shift of officers 24 hours a day. White also reported Monday that his office is applying for a grant to acquire a high-tech camera system that responds to the sound of gunshots. Tobias column: When night falls, there are no brothers, just 'the other'
A rabbi once asked his students, “How do we know when the night has ended and the day has begun?” A crucial question, that. In Judaism, some prayers and acts belong to the day. Some only at night. So the brightest Yeshiva student offered an answer: “Rav, is it when I look out at the fields and I can distinguish between my field and the field of my neighbor’s —...

Sheridan column: Sentence Little Free Library vandals to read books
Do you ever notice the Little Free Library boxes that punctuate yards, parks and corners in our communities? There is one on the Perquimans County Courthouse lawn adjacent to the sheriff’s office in downtown Hertford. As an avid reader I take great delight in leaving books in the Little Free Library box and take greater delight a few days later when a book is gone, wondering who might be enjoying...
