I don't know how to feel about this
I don’t know how to feel about all of this. I have entered uncharted territory, for me anyway. I am a lifelong fan of the Miami Dolphins and the North Carolina Tar Heels. Those are my teams, rain or shine, and there has not been a lot of shine in my life. Dan Marino was my Dolphins quarterback when I was young and he was amazing. Unfortunately, he never had...
Postcards from Ukraine: Domestic violence also devastating for Ukrainian families
Writer’s Note: Normally, a photo accompanies these articles, but this “picture postcard” is too horrific to publish. And it has nothing to do with the war in Ukraine. It has to do with the side effects of loss, fear, PTSD and grief … with very little support for its victims. Domestic abuse is sharply on the rise. When a child has lost everything: home, toys, pets, family, they cling to the rituals and routines of their former life. Brushing teeth, a bedtime story, a prayer...
Throckmorton column: Growth in population, crime, drove need for police pros
Before the Industrial Revolution, policing in America and England was typically carried out voluntarily by individual citizens concerned with maintaining law and order in their communities. This part-time citizen volunteer model of policing worked well until the late 1700s and early 1800s, when exploding population growth resulted in more frequent incidents of crime and violent civil unrest in cities throughout England and the United States. It soon became apparent that...
Throckmorton column: Choose inner circle carefully
“Now, when Job’s three friends heard of all this adversity that had come upon him, each one came from his own place — Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. For they had made an appointment together to come and mourn with him and to comfort him. So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great.” — Job 2:11, 13. ...
PCRA's Jollification! tour goes on despite storm
BELVIDERE — Tropical Storm Ophelia played havoc with organizers’ plans but failed to stop Jollification!, the Perquimans County Restoration Association’s annual historic home tour on Saturday, Sept. 23. Jollification is held each year to fund the Perquimans County Restoration Association’s historic preservation efforts, which include operating the Newbold-White House in Hertford, North Carolina’s oldest brick home. Plans this year called for an outdoor dinner and silent auction on the grounds...
Edenton tennis group adds to Key endowed scholarship
A college scholarship fund in Tony Key’s memory is now an endowed scholarship, thanks to donations from the late Hertford resident’s many friends, including in Edenton’s tennis community. Following his tragic death in a traffic accident in February, Frank and Roberta Heath and Wallace and Freda Nelson established the Tony Key English/Language Arts & Fine Arts Scholarship in Key’s memory through the Perquimans County Schools Foundation. With donations made by community, family and friends, the scholarship was endowed in less than one month and is...

The board held a preliminary discussion of a proposed policy on Naloxone/Narcan administration in schools Monday night. The item was on the agenda for information and discussion only, with action on the proposed policy expected at the board’s October meeting. ...

Hartman: Fear of the Lord the anxiety which leads to excitement
As we considered last time, the idea that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom is a continuing theme in Psalm 111:10 and Proverbs 1:7, 14:27, and 15:33. Still, there seems to be a paradox because 1 John 4:18 also states that there is no fear in love. We also discover in 1 John 4:7-12 that God is Love and in Isaiah 11:1-3 that Jesus would delight in the fear of the Lord. Many people I’ve talked to over the years have...

Derek Johnikins, of the 130 block of King St., Hertford, was arrested Sept. 13 and served with two orders of arrest for failure to pay child support. A $1,500 secured bond was set. Jason Winslow, of the 688 block...

Throckmorton column: Be calm. He will take care of you
Matthew, Mark, and Luke record the incident of Jesus quelling that great storm as He and the disciples cross the Sea of Galilee. Mark 4:35 sets the scene: “That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, ‘Let us go over to the other side.” Now, the disciples were seasoned fishermen who frequently fished this body of water 680 feet below sea level. They were accustomed to the howling winds that conjured up intense winds and gales. But on this particular day, they panicked...
Hartman column: 'Fear the Lord' doesn't mean God should terrify us
Throughout Scripture, the idea that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom is a continuing theme. (See Psalm 111:10 and Proverbs 1:7, 14:27 and 15:33). Still, there seems to be a paradox because Scripture (1 John 4:18) also states that there is no fear in love. We learn in 1 John 4:18 that perfect love casts out fear and in verses 7-12 that God is perfect love. We also learn in Isaiah 11:1-3 that the Christ, Jesus, would delight in the fear...
Throckmorton column: How 'The Shot Caller' became one called to Christ
During my career in law enforcement, I always tried to focus on the fact that the criminals I encountered would always have the opportunity to repent and be productive citizens or be called to serve God in a mighty way. I was never there to judge them for the moment. The following scripture, Luke 23-39-49, was a reminder that repentance is never too late for anyone: “And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, ‘If thou be Christ, save thyself and...

It makes my dad heart happy
There is a cool thing happening in Boulder, Colorado and while it’s known, I’m not certain it’s being adequately appreciated. Forget about “Prime” for a few minutes. Ignore for a bit all of the talk, hype and hoopla that surrounds Deion Sanders and let’s focus on the man and parent. He isn’t the first person to coach his child, but I don’t remember a division one head football coach whose...
Citizen calls for animal welfare rules in Perquimans
HERTFORD — A local resident has written a letter to Perquimans County officials urging the adoption of rules to protect animal welfare in the county. Mary Vidaurri sent a letter to the Perquimans Board of Commissioners following the board’s work session last month on the topic of animal welfare. The letter was included in the agenda packet for the commissioners’ Sept. 5 meeting. “The current ordinance is totally inadequate and...

EDENTON — The 77th annual Chowan County Regional Fair, one of only 25 small county fairs still operating in North Carolina, will open at the American Legion Fairgrounds in Edenton on Tuesday and run through Saturday, Sept. 30. If anybody knows about the Chowan County Regional Fair, it has to be its manager, E.C. Toppin. Toppin, a member of Edenton’s American Legion, has been involved in organizing the annual fair for 52 years. ...
