Hoggard column: See your life through God’s eyes. It will change everything
Worship comes down to exalting, adoring and obeying God. Unless one spends time looking at God, how can one hear His voice in order to obey it? Many people say they never see God, yet they never look for Him. In Revelation, John is told to “come up here” to see from God’s point of view. What John saw there has mesmerized and perplexed humanity for two thousand years. A vision of who God is can change everything! ...

McDowell column: Ending protections for Native remains erases history
Long before European colonization began on Turtle Island, the original peoples occupied the rivers, streams, swamps, and forests of what is today North Carolina. The Tuscarora Nation has occupied the lands surrounding the Roanoke, Pamlico, Tar, Neuse, and Cape Fear rivers for thousands of years. Our tribal neighbors, the Saponi, the Occaneechi, the Tsalagi, the Catawba, and many others have also occupied the state since time immemorial. Like our extended...
Willie Mays: A winner in every sense of the word
This is a column about a winner. I could discuss the NBA, the NHL or the UFL all of whom just crowned or are about to crown new champions. Instead, I want to write about a fella who won the World Series 70 years ago. A gentleman they call the “Say Hey Kid.” Willie Mays passed away on Tuesday and, while I’m not one to often discuss baseball, Mays was...
Orr column: Fried zucchini takes basic cacio e pepe dish to new level
I love summer for the fresh locally grown produce. I no longer have my vegetable garden after selling the Inn, but I do have my herb gardens. I can also find local produce at our farmers market as well as at Bunch’s farm stand, and many other stands that pop up throughout our area. With a dozen zucchini on hand the other day I was mulling over ideas for a...
Gardner column: How our border problem is actually an opportunity
A neighbor’s son spent two years with the Peace Corps in Morocco where he met and married a Moroccan woman. It took him three years and the intercession of U.S. Rep. Greg Murphy, R-NC, to get her into the U.S. legally. This sclerotic bureaucratic ordeal is an example of why so many immigrants don’t bother to go the legal route, instead entering our country by climbing through fences and overwhelming...

Letter: Story on track naming for Wiggins needs clarification
We are writing to clarify information included in recent articles that appeared in the Perquimans Weekly and The Daily Advance concerning the naming of the Perquimans High School track. The misunderstanding appears to stem from the consideration of only one of the two meetings involved with the presentation and request for naming the track during the March 26, 2018, school board meeting and the meeting on April 23, 2018, when the vote was taken. ...

The second, which Town Council agreed to facilitate Monday night, is being coordinated by the Juneteenth Committee of the Perquimans Chapter of the NAACP. Both events are free and set for Saturday. The town-sponsored observance starts at 10:30...
Hoggard column: When God calls, we must, like Isaiah, listen and obey
The prophet Isaiah’s calling story — a stark contrast to the bleak future he prophesied — is revealed in the sixth chapter of his writings. In the first five chapters, he paints a grim picture of Israel’s future, foretelling widespread devastation in the land of Canaan. As a prophet in Jerusalem, he even predicts the destruction of his own home. This must have raised questions among his neighbors, prompting him to explain his calling. ...
God will keep his promise to you
I promise! Do you always keep your promise? With the business of life and having four children, many times I make promises and forget to keep them. It’s not that I don’t wanna keep my promises, nor is it a regret of promising the thing in the first place and hoping my wife or children will forget. It is simply I cannot remember all of the things that I have...
