Hartman: Salvation not a process but a person. Jesus is The Way
The term “Christian” was a pejorative that the enemies of Christ coined for His followers. According to Acts 11:26, the followers of Christ were first called Christians at Antioch. Originally, believers were called the “People of The Way” because Jesus said He was The Way. In John Chapter 14, Jesus declares He is the Way to God. This statement leaves His followers with several questions. Thomas posed the first: “How can we know the way?” Jesus answered, not by telling the disciples that they knew...
Orr column: Asparagus adds green hue to soup
I love the colors and flavors of spring. The variations of flowering hues and the bright chartreuse leaves of trees inspire me to create dishes in a spring palette. Beautiful spring vegetables such as asparagus, artichokes and peas add such fresh vibrancy and flavor to a meal. And with undertones of cool evenings still lingering a nice spring vegetable soup makes a wonderful beginning to dinner or a main course at lunch along with a little crusty bread and a salad. ...
Charles Barkley is one of the best - again
I wrote last week about a newer YouTube channel I was watching and wanted to tell you about. When you love sports like I do, sometimes you watch people play and sometimes, you simply listen to people talk about what they think when they watch other people play. For years, the majority of the sports media consumed was created and distributed by journalists. That made sense because until the last few decades, the majority of sports media was written, printed and then read. ...
Tobias: The House of Atreus and circle of violence, vengeance
“What do you think of the campus riots?” A friend and I were doing the “solving the world’s problems” thing in the Barker House parking lot. Fixing the world is a subject that I never tire of, but then again, it is tiring all the same. I didn’t hesitate: “If they cross the line into violence, then arrest and expel.” I’m all for freedom of speech, especially in regard to...
Hoggard column: Entering world as agent of light risky. Shine anyway
During the Roaring Twenties of the last century, President Calvin Coolidge led with dignity. He is well-known for his quiet demeanor and impeccable wit. “Silent Cal” knew how to make a moment land. He invited some friends from his hometown to tour the White House once. They were all intimidated by the high society of the nation’s capital, so they committed to taking their cues from the president. At dinner,...
Nixon wears a lot of hats, and each one is important
Jonathan Nixon is a Perquimans County civil servant whom few people ever have the chance to meet face to face. Most of the time, the work of his office does not affect daily life for county residents. But when it does, Perquimans County Emergency Services and its work are as important as anything can get. Nixon’s role includes not just coordinating the work of Perquimans’ first responders and essential volunteers...

Moyock church, association commit $60K to help ServeNC
As churches make preparations for the statewide initiative ServeNC in early August, a church and association in northeastern North Carolina have agreed to commit upwards of $60,000 to neighboring churches as a way to encourage churches in the region to “ServeNC.” According to James Harrington, pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church in Moyock, his church has agreed to give $1,000 to any neighboring church that needs financial assistance to complete service projects for ServeNC, with a total pledge of up to $60,000 to neighboring churches. ...
Teen is one of Hertford's newest full-time entrepreneurs
Dayne Colson is one of Hertford’s newest entrepreneurs. That’s hardly a rare distinction with the town on the commercial upswing, but Colson, an advertising specialty manufacturer and a new investor in commercial real estate, just graduated from high school. He is only 18 years old. Colson runs Dayne’s Designs out of the old Country Corner Cafe Building at the intersection of Cypress Stretch Lane and Grub Street. He just took...
You might find this show entertaining
I discovered a new YouTube channel about eight months ago and I have found myself actually looking forward to new episodes every week, so I wanted to share it with you. Maybe you’ll find it as interesting as I do. There exists a gentleman and journalist by the name of Pablo Torre. If you don’t know him by name, you might recognize his mischievous smile and overly exposed calves from ESPN shows like High Noon, Around The Horn, Highly Questionable and a plethora of other...
Hartman column: Living the Christian life requires faith, study, prayer
The Christian life is a straightforward matter. It requires us to confess our sins and seek forgiveness from Christ. There is no other means of obtaining forgiveness apart from faith in Jesus’ work. No amount of religious works or observances can earn forgiveness. Living the Christian life demands faith. We must enter by faith and continue to live by faith. God’s unmerited grace makes the Christian life possible. Paul unequivocally asserts in Romans 1:16 that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the power of God...

Gardner: Is inflation making economy good or bad? Both, at same time
At lunch with an old friend, talk turned to the high cost of dining out. Entrees over $25 are not uncommon around here. By the time we were served, our conversation segued to the rising cost of hotel rooms. My friend paid over $500 a night in New York City. I told him a local hotel owner I know gets $290 a night on weekends. He’s usually full. When the...
Hertford must pay electric supplier additional $168K
The town of Hertford must pay its electric supplier $168,139 over the next two years because of higher-than-anticipated energy costs in 2022. The city of Elizabeth City and the town of Edenton also must pay the N.C. Eastern Municipal Power Agency almost $2.1 million and $715,020, respectively, because of those added costs. That’s because NCEMPA, which is the electric supplier for the three municipalities, has an agreement with Duke Energy...
