The Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys’ golf team set another team record when they carded a 295 at the John Kirk Invite held at LongBow Golf Club May 13.
It was the first time a WHA team shot below a 300. Finishing second was Cass Lake-Bena with a 346, Pine River-Backus took third at 353 and Nevis shot a 358 for fourth.
Lake Elling of WHA took medalist honors with a 6-under 66, one stroke ahead of teammate Parker Brock. Maverick Reed shot a 79, Michael Dascalos an 83, Gus Pedersen shot an 84 and Logan Felton an 89.
Leading Nevis was Eli Lewis with an 84, Lealan Norby shot an 88, Finn Henry a 90 and Hunter Simon shot a 96.
Park Rapids won the girls’ invite with a 405, Pine River-Backus was second with a 414 and UNC shot a 445 for third. Nevis finished with a 567.
Alexis Usher of Park Rapids shot an 88 for medalist honors with WHA’s Kianna Johnson carding an 89 for second. Elaina Dascalos of WHA shot a 164 in her first varsity meet.
Ella Marotte led Nevis with a 113, Olivia Artis shot a 145, Serena Krotzer carded a 153 and Evelynn Johnson had a 155.
The boys will vie for a second straight Section 8A title May 28-29 at McGregor Golf Course, while Johnson will shoot for another trip to the State Tournament.
JV invite
A boys’ JV conference meet at Sand Trap Golf Course in Cass Lake was held May 14.
WHA and Cass Lake-Bena tied for second with a 189, five strokes behind UNC. Nevis took fourth with a 247.
The Wolves had three finish strong with Alex Grundeen shooting a 44 to take third. Both Noah McWaters and Colton Hauser tied for fourth with a 45, while Bryce Zubke and Garret Turney both shot a 55.
Brandon Brown of Cass Lake took first with a 39 and Sam Roiko of UNC shot a 43 for second.
Garrett Marotte led Nevis with a 58, Brennan Snow shot a 60, Henry Sawyer carded a 63 and Kaiden Garner had a 66.
JH meet
A final boys’ and girls’ JH meet was held May 15 at Greenwood Golf Course hosted by Red Lake.
WHA boys took third with a 307, behind UNC shooting a 246 and Red Lake carding a 248.
Monte Tendrup of Bigfork and Jacob Andersen of Red Lake tied for first with a 77.
Mack Holly led WHA with a 92, Trevor Kuechle shot a 107 and Corey Weeks had a 108.
On the girls’ side, UNC took first with a 298, Park Rapids was second with a 314 and WHA shot a 33 for third.
Natalie Martin of Park Rapids shot the low round with a 65. Hailey Brock was second with a 76, Dascalos shot a 119, Natalie Gardner had a 138 and Olivia Koch a 143.
