The dangerous intersection of CSAH 1 and CSAH 44 east of Pine River will become a four-way stop.

On July 31 a two car crash resulted in the death of a 21-year-old Backus woman. There are stop signs on CSAH 44, but not on CSAH 1. Traffic counts are aboout 1,000 a day.

Over the years a series of safety measures have been tried, but crashes continue to happen. First, overhead lighting was installed. Then came flashing lights on stop signs. The next recommendation was to make it a four-way stop. In addition, the County Board asked the Highway Department to add rumble strips in both directions.

A two-acre floating bog in Boy Lake near Boy River that tore loose from shore during July 4 storms, has been careening around the lake, causing damage to docks, boat lifts and shorelines. Twenty foot tall trees on the bog act like a sail, propelling it around the lake.

The DNR has a “floating bog policy” requiring a permit to re-attach or remove the bog.

“There should be no problem getting the permit,” said John Sumption of Environmental Services.
