Empowering Women to Lead Conference Sept. 13 at NL Casino

    2024-08-27

Life can be demanding, especially for women in rural areas. The GFWC Nevis Area Women’s Club will tackle those issues to help support rural women by a hopeful response to life’s challenges at this year’s conference, Empowering Women/Resilience.

The conference will be held at Northern Lights Casino in Walker Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This year’s conference is designed to explore and identify resilience-building strategies, help attendees learn to regulate their emotions, stop the cycle of negative thoughts, accept change and lead a healthy lifestyle.

In 2022, the club hosted their first conference “Empowering Women to Lead,” where 300 women of all ages attended, listened to speakers and made strides to learn the role of women in leadership. Based on that conference, the evaluations submitted by attendees and the new information from the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota regarding the mental health challenges of rural women, the club decided another conference focused on resilience, the ability to bounce back after crises, would be helpful to rural women.

Four speakers will provide engaging and thought-provoking information for rural women of all ages. In addition to the speakers — and door prizes throughout the day — special highlights include jingle dancers, a drumming ceremony, regional arts and crafts displays and the opportunity to network with other women. There will also be the opportunity to earn continuing education units for professionals attending.

The club has invited Dr. Emily Sargent, Ph.D., as the second speaker of the day. A clinical psychologist at Sanford Health and a clinical investigator at Sanford Center of Biobehavioral Research in Fargo, Dr. Sargent specializes in trauma-informed treatment and care for Native Americans, in tribal, rural and urban areas. She has also completed work in Indigenous Resilience.

Dr. Sargent is an enrolled tribal member of the White Earth Band of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. Her family is Bear Clan. Her Anishinaabe name is Ishpiming Mazinaate Biigisin Imma Nibiikong that translates to Sky Reflects on the Water Woman.

Dr. Sargent loves to spend time back home in White Earth with her family, being outdoors, spending time at the lake and traveling.

Tickets are $55 for the full day and include healthy snacks and a luncheon. For more information or to register for the conference, visit the website at neviswomen sclub.wixsite.com
