Paws and Claws Pets of the Week
Smiley came to the shelter as a stray and she is super friendly with everyone. The finders say she did well with their kids and that she has killed chickens. She is not fully house broken so she will need a person who can help teach her. Although Smiley is crate-trained, she is not a fan of being in her kennel at the shelter. She seems to be anxious in her kennel, as her husky instincts want to keep on running. She is not reliable off leash and would love a fenced yard. Smiley does well with other dogs. Check...
Now that’s a big muskie!
While visiting the Leech Lake area Aug. 17, Kurt Quimby of Tenstrike can attest that “lightning can strike twice,” as he scored another big muskie. Roughly a year ago, Kurt appeared in The Pilot-Independent with a “big one.” Kurt was again being guided by area fishing guide Dan Craven, who caught a muskie that was a few inches bigger than Kurt’s.

Vin Weber is Walker Rotary guest speaker
Walker Rotary hosted guest speaker Vin Weber Aug. 20, who has spent most of his adult life in politics, telling the group “What’s going on in D.C.” He said that that the country is gridlocked on many topics — such as health care and green transitions — the two parties cannot seem to get along and function. It does not lead to a basically optimistic outlook, he cautioned. There used to be bipartisan voting on issues, but today, legislators are polarized in Washington, as well as at the grassroots level. Weber’s message is that everyone has to find a way...

The old and the new
A couple of weeks ago, the Leech Lake Regatta sailed by our house for the 53rd time. Wow! Just think — 53 years. It is one of the oldest community celebrations on the lake. In 1971, John Elsenpeter was president of the Leech Lake Chamber of Commerce and he thought it would be a good idea to have a sailboat race on Leech Lake. John, however, was known as the president of the First National Bank in Walker — not as a sailor. So, he...
