Tianna Tee Time: Nine-Hole League
The summer season wrapped up Aug. 27 with a round of golf using only three clubs, including your putter. You could choose the other two clubs. Limiting your clubs to three makes a lot of shots challenging as you find yourself with the wrong option in the three you chose. The winners of the prize money at the banquet following golf were those with the high score. Congratulations to Cher Hambrecht and Lee Sand. They both took home a lovely plant. ...
Tianna Tee Time: 18-Hole League
The event for the Tianna Ladies 18-Hole League Thursday was Team Challenge. However, Mother Nature didn’t cooperate and we were rained out to golf. But we didn’t let that stop us as many still gathered at Tianna for cards, bridge and a few holes of golf. A delicious banquet dinner was served to all by the Tianna staff. Also, winnings from our Presidents Cup in early August were distributed. Election of officers for 2025 took place with the following results: Kathy Gardner, president; MJ Warren, vice president; Carol Doschadis, secretary and Kathy Hoffman, treasurer. League play continues through Sept. 19.

Theology in the trenches: ‘It’s All Coming Back to Me Now’
Back in the day, I was mesmerized with grandma’s closets. All appeared to be in order. Coming from a larger family, our closets never quite seemed as calm. I recall opening the door to one of grandma’s organizational spaces and within it, things were placed neatly. Stacked were the magazines, the towels, the catalogues. If one was looking for something, they’d be sure to find it. Growing up, mom had order as did I while raising our brood. However, grandma’s closets were different. They were...
WHA volleyball team opens season with 4-set win
Aubrey Morrison became a member of 1,000 dig club in the Wolves’ four-set win over visiting Greenway Thursday night. Coming into the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley’s season-opening match, Morrison was only three digs shy of the milestone. She did that early in the first set and finished with 36 digs. WHA started off strong to win the first two sets 25-17 and 25-18. Greenway took the second 25-19, but in the fourth WHA...
Football season underway, WHA falls 40-0 at Red Lake County Central
The high school football season got underway last week with nearly every Minnesota team hitting the gridiron only days before the start of the school year. Walker-Hackensack-Akeley, looking to improve upon last year’s 1-8 mark, did not get the season off to a good start as they fell 40-0 at Red Lake Falls Thursday night. The Wolves did have some positive plays, but not enough as they finished with only...
WHA soccer team opens with 6-0 home win
Lizzy Cairns scored three times, Zoe Cox twice and the defense played superb as Walker-Hackensack-Akeley opened the soccer season Aug. 24 with 6-0 home win over Melrose. Coach Bill Marshall was a little concerned how the team would respond without Britta Rand, the program’s all-time leading scorer, who was lost for the season with a knee injury. It only took about 15 minutes to find out, as Cox scored on a beautiful pass from Piper Burns that was set up by Cairns’ corner kick. ...

Youth Leadership students attend Walker Rotary
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) students Layla Gale and Cecelia Gale attended Walker Rotary’s Aug. 27 meeting. The young women showed scenes from the camp they attended at the University of Minnesota-Crookston campus. Participants learned the tools and skills for what it means to communicate openly with people. RYLA is enriching and can be a changemaker in the school community. Cecelia wishes she could do it all over again. Layla remembers hugging the other students more than twice when she left. The activities in which they participated included packing 389 food shelf boxes; water sports; the Rose project, where they went around the community giving out roses — even to police officers; walking a plank and Zumba classes. They listened to presentations on diversity and inclusiveness, with discussions on introvert and extrovert personalities. They were questioned with the thought-provoking question of where they see themselves in 10 years, and discussed the “Habits of Highly Effective Teens.” Way to go, gals. Pictured are Layla and Cecelia during the meeting.
