    JDC employee safety important to board

    The Jefferson Davis County Board of Supervisors continued its first July meeting July 3 in the Jefferson Davis County Courtroom at 11 a.m.

    All county employees and elected officials were encouraged to attend the meeting. Board members discussed budget restraints and how important it is to stay within the allowed financial guidelines. Also on the agenda was employee safety with an emphasis on heat related safety.

    “We appreciate each and every one of our employees,” said Board President Michael Evans. Evans thanked the workers for putting themselves in dangerous situations way during storms and at night and encouraged them to make sure their appearance is visible. “We can replace equipment, but we can’t replace a life,” he said.

    “This heat is extremely dangerous,” said District 5 Supervisor Jerry Gholar. “Please drink plenty of water and try to stay cool. I want everyone to go home feeling good,” he said.

    “Use common sense in the heat,” said District 3 Supervisor Demarrio Booth. Booth suggested two employees stay together at all times in case one gets in harm’s way. “I appreciate all of you,” said Booth. “And I am not going to have any of my crew do anything I wouldn’t do,” he said.

    District 2 Supervisor Ricky Barrett discussed the epidemic of pine beetles in the county.

    He is concerned about falling trees and is working with SMPDD on a grant to possibly get assistance with removing the decaying trees.

    District 1 Supervisor Corky Holliman warned the employees that April to October is peak season for snake bites.

    “Each of you are valued, and we want you to be as safe as possible,” said Holliman.

    The county is now charging for the use of the landfill, but only to contractors. “We have had a lot of people coming from other counties to use our landfill because we were not charging a fee,” said Holliman. Jefferson Davis County residents will not be charged, only contractors.

    Board Attorney Wes Daughdrill encouraged each employee to familiarize themselves with the JDC Employee Handbook before the meeting was adjourned. After the meeting concluded, employees and elected officials enjoyed an afternoon of fellowship with a meal provided by the board at the County Administration Building.
