CHESTERFIELD - The 113th Chesterfield County Fair is this weekend. It kicks off Friday, August 23 and offers fun and excitement through the end of the month. Attending the annual event has become a family tradition for many.

There is something for everyone at the fair. Attractions include the following: midway with games, classic carnival food and rides, horse show, animal exhibits, pageants, arts and crafts competition, hot glass academy, magic show, milking cow demo, swine pig races, cowboy circus, dog show, foam zone and more. If you feel lucky, stop by the Bingo Tent to win cash!

Medieval Jousting will take place on August 23 and 24, and the Revenge Roughstock Rodeo will entertain ticket holders on the final two nights, August 30 and 31.

"Make sure you check out all of the Arts and Crafts displays. Local artists and artisans have worked all year on projects ranging from paintings to quilts to origami and everything in between," Chesterfield resident Kelly Sessions, superintendent of arts and crafts, said. "Perhaps you will gain inspiration to submit your own entries next year."

I love visiting the Arts & Crafts Building filled with flowers, canned goods, vegetables, baked items, photography, needlework, plants, LEGO builds, artwork and homemade crafts to admire the entries and see which ones win blue ribbons. There are a lot of talented folks of all ages in our neck of the woods.

Crowd-favorite comedy hypnotist Brad Matchett will once again entertain spectators with his family-friendly Vegas-style show. He uses volunteers in his act that will leave you in stitches.

The Chesterfield County Youth Poultry Show hosted by the Virginia Cooperative Extension will be on Saturday, August 31 at 10 a.m. My favorite entry last year was "Burnt Toast," and the previous year it was "Elvis."

A nine-day silent auction begins on opening day, and the items will be on display at the fair each day. All funds raised will go towards scholarships for Chesterfield County High School seniors who graduate next year in June.

"We truly appreciate the support from individuals and businesses who donated gift certificates, merchandise and services this year and in the past," Brenda White, Chesterfield County Fair general manager, said. "Year to date, we have raised over $16,000."

Chesterfield County Fair: Clear bag policy

The Chesterfield County Fair Association implemented a clear bag policy this year to provide a safer environment for the public and significantly expedite fairgoers’ entry into the fairgrounds. The policy limits the size and type of bags that will be allowed into the fairgrounds. Exceptions to this policy will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection.

The Chesterfield County Fairgrounds are located at 10300 Courthouse Road in Chesterfield. Catch the fun August 23 - 31 from 5 - 11 p.m. Monday - Friday and 11 a.m.-11 p.m. on Saturdays and Sunday. Friday, August 30 will operate from 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. Visit chesterfieldcountyfair.org for additional information including group rates, wristbands for rides and an entertainment guide .
