COLONIAL HEIGHTS – A man has been charged with arson after authorities said he set fire to his apartment early Friday morning and would not leave the premises.

Ka’Wan Yarborough, 22, is being held without bond at Riverside Regional Jail in Prince George County, James Jennings, the city’s deputy fire marshal, said in an email. An initial court date was not immediately set.

It happened around 12:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Newcastle Drive, Jennings said. Units arriving on scene saw fire and smoke coming from one of the apartments and discovered Yarborough inside.

As other tenants were being evacuated from their apartments, Jennings said, Yarborough repeatedly refused commands to leave. Police officers were eventually able to reach through a downstairs window and snatch him out.

No one else was injured in the blaze, which is still under investigation. Jennings said Yarborough was the only person inside the burning apartment.
