Catching up after a long weekend

    By Will Richmond, Providence Journal,

Good morning, I'm Will Richmond at The Providence Journal and this is the Daily Briefing.

To those of you that had Monday off I hope you had an enjoyable long weekend. As the reality sets in at my house that two kids and my wife are headed back to school before Labor Day there's a feeling of jamming in as much summer as possible in the last couple of weeks.

For us that meant a pool day, a beach day and a round of golf with my oldest son and mother-in-law. Most of our meals were cooked on the grill and of course everyone is staying up late and sleeping in. I think they're in for a hard reality in two weeks.

If your weekend was as busy as mine you may have missed some of the stories from the past couple of days. Here's a look at what stands out.

    • In this week's Political Scene, The Journal's Patrick Anderson travels to western Cranston to take a look at the status of a proposed housing development and how the highly contested race for mayor fits in.

    • Is it possible Amelia Earhart once spent time on Block Island? The Journal's Paul Parker explores the question in this week's edition of What and Why RI and has the answer.

–• J. Michael Downey, the long-time president of Rhode Island Council 94 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, died early Sunday morning. The Journal's Katherine Gregg looks back at Downey's legacy.

    • Who's making the most of their time in Patriots training camp? Take a look at five players who stood out in recent practices.

    • Today is your last chance to vote in our bracket contest to determine Rhode Island's favorite summer event with Waterfire squaring off against the Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals. Poll close at 9 p.m.

    RHODY RANKS

Every day we receive emails ranking Rhode Island. While the work behind the ranks may be dubious, they can be fun. Each day I'll share where Rhody Ranks from one of the latest emails.

If you're looking to sell your house, then you might have to wait quite a while before you do so, according to a recent study by real estate investors Cash for Home . The study was commissioned to better understand how long it takes to sell a house by analyzing over 2 million properties on Realtor and then examining the proportion of properties listed for over 30 days compared to the total number of homes available.

The study then analyzed housing markets in each state to identify those with the longest house selling times with Rhode Island having the fourth longest time to sell a home.
