    RI's shellfishermen face another hurdle

    By Will Richmond, Providence Journal,

    2024-08-28

Good morning, I'm Will Richmond at The Providence Journal and this is the Daily Briefing.

When my brother-in-law and his family visited this summer from Iowa one of the things he wanted to do was walk along the docks in Newport to find the largest yachts. For some reason, the shorter trip to Galilee to view the fishing boats wasn't on his list.

We know though that shellfishing is part of the state's lifeblood and shellfishermen and their boats make it happen.

Despite their importance, another obstacle has risen to remain viable.

The Journal's Antonia Farzan reports that Rhode Island's working fishing boats are finding it harder to find a place to call home.

What's behind the squeezing of dock space? Here's what Antonia found out.

    • Possibly the highest-profile primary race in Rhode Island this season is for Cranston mayor. Incumbent Kenneth Hopkins is being challenged by Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung and the two have been battling for the Republican nomination for months.

With the primary less than two weeks away, The Journal's Antonia Farzan caught up with the candidates – along with lone Democrat Robert Ferri – to see where they stand on the biggest issues.

    • Speaking of heated primaries, the barbs continue to fly in the Senate District 9 primary between current Rep. Enrique Sanchez and former Rep. Anastacia Williams. Now Santos Javier – the third candidate in this heated Democratic primary contest - announced that he had filed his own complaint with the state Board of Elections alleging "voter intimidation" and "vote stealing'' by Sanchez's campaign.

The Journal's Katherine Gregg has the latest.

    • Beyond the sailing and bachelorette parties, Newport is full of history and plans are now in the works to turn the City by the Sea's oldest building into a center dedicated to understanding Black history.

The Journal and Newport Daily News' Savana Dunning has the details on what's happening at the Wanton-Lyman-Hazard house.

    • We all know Taylor Swift has a home in Watch Hill, but how much do you know about the home itself?

From neighbors to the neighborhood, here's a look at what you need to know.
