PROVIDENCE – A 51-year-old man is locked up, and facing a murder charge, after recent developments in an assault case, Providence police said Friday.

Medical examiners have ruled that 47-year-old Ricky Saunders, who suffered a serious head injury in an Aug. 24 assault and later died, was the victim of a homicide, according to a Providence police spokeswoman, Lindsay Lague.

Dwayne Gibson and Saunders argued on Cliff Street before Gibson punched Saunders in the face, Lague said.

Saunders fell to the ground and hit his head, she said. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment.

Gibson was arrested and appeared before Judge Stephen M. Isherwood on Wednesday in District Court, Providence. He faces a single count of first-degree murder.

Isherwood ordered him held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston.

Saunders' death was the eighth homicide this year in Providence.

Let's be honest here, the guy more than likely hit him with a sucker punch that most do. But he hit him with a fist and 1x. 1st degree murder means in normal terms that u wanted to kill him and it was preplanned. That's not the case here. So why are these cops and AG's constantly allowed to use there vertical charging system? AKA: throw as much shit on the wall and see what sticks. The guy in jail isn't a "good" guy. Even before this he was a frequent member of the Cranston Country club. But charging 1st degree murder is also wrong to.
