Head out to sea and learn why Point Judith could be in danger

Good morning, I'm Will Richmond at The Providence Journal and this is the Daily Briefing.

Before heading out in the open waters as you travel from Point Judith to Block Island there is first the Harbor of Refuge to pass by.

Two million tons of stone put in place over 100 years ago to protect the shore and boats that find safe harbor. But like anything close to – or in this case in – the water damage is sure to come. The rocks have taken the pounding they're intended to absorb but some sections have given up. The waves winning the century-old battle.

With sections of the more than 2 miles of wall now tossed into the ocean below some are calling for the breakwaters to be repaired.

The Journal's Jonny Williams recently took to the water with fisherman Mike Marchetti to get a firsthand look at the damage and learn more about the calls to invest in safe the breakwaters. Join Jonny on his trip in his story from about the Mister G.

    • The parents of the Warren man accused of killing his former chiropractor in a homophobic rage disregarded doctors’ advice that their son take medicine to treat his worsening mental illness in the years leading up to the slaying.

The Journal's Katie Mulvaney has the latest in Owen Morris' ongoing murder trial.

    • We continue our guide to dining in Rhode Island with Journal food and dining editor Gail Ciampa offering a look at 10 places across the state you've got to try across the state with a taste of everything from Mexican to Italian and English tea to brunch. I hope you ate breakfast before checking this one out.

    • Thanks to the fans at Fenway Park, Neil Diamond has become a part of New England lore but there's more to the man than "Sweet Caroline." Journal contributor Jeff Wagner previews "A Beautiful Noise – The Neil Diamond Musical" which opens later this week at Providence Performing Arts Center as it kicks off its national tour.

    • URI's A.J. Peña was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week for his outstanding game against Campbell. It's an honor that comes after playing with a heavy heart, The Journal's Bill Kock reports.
