Oysters, Oktoberfest and more – oh my: Fun food things to do in Providence

An annual oyster fest will have a new home. Oktoberfest season is upon us. There's afternoon teas planned. It's getting to be your last chance to join me for a new event. I've got a deal for you, too.

The 195 District Park in Providence will be the new place for showcasing Rhody oyster farms, local craft beer and wine at the 10th Annual Ocean State Oyster Festival.

Back in 1890, Narragansett Beer was founded by six German immigrants searching for a place to make authentic, German-style beer. Mark Hellendrung revived the brand in 2005. It had closed in 1981. Today, they continue to create German-inspired beers like Fest Marzen and Hefeweizen under brewer Lee Lord. They will celebrate in a way to make Gannett's founders proud.

It's last call for the USA Today Wine & Food Experience which will also be at the 195 District Park in Providence. It's Saturday.

The Ocean State Oyster Festival celebrates its 10th year celebrating Rhode Island's aquaculture economy. It takes place on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 1 to 8 p.m. Tickets for admittance are $15 per person. Oyster and drink tickets are available for purchase separately. Children and teens 14 and under are admitted free. There is no rain date and it's a weather permitting event.

There will be oyster farms, live music and drink as well as food trucks in 195 District Park, next to the Pedestrian Walk Bridge along the Providence River.

Participating farms include: 401 Breachway Oysters, Beehan Family Farm, Blue Acres Oyster Farm, Bluff Hill Cove Oysters, East Beach Oyster Co., Moonstone Oyster Co., Mooresfield Farm Oysters, Quonnie Siren Oysters, Quonset Point Oysters, Rocky Rhode Oyster Co., Thomas Point Oysters, Walrus & Carpenter Oysters, West Passage Oysters and the Watch Hill Oyster Co.

Food trucks participating include Shuckin' Truck, Sunset Farms Food Truck and Atomic Blonde Ice Cream Truck.

    Narragansett Brewery Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest at Narragansett Beer brings Munich back to celebrate its long-standing German heritage for the fourth year. A 30-by-40-foot tent will hold their biergarten. They will be serving an authentic German menu. Entertainment includes music from TubaFrau and Bavarian Bros and traditional dancing with the German American Social Club of RI . There will also be Stein-Hoisting and Best Dressed contests along with their German beers.

General admission tickets cost $25 per session and includes a glass stein and one beer token. The times are Friday, Oct. 4 from 5 to 10 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 5 from noon to 4 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 5 from 5 to 9 p.m.; Sunday afternoon, Oct. 6 from noon to 5 p.m.

There will be limited sales at the door. There are limited designated driver tickets available per session that include entry and a non-alcoholic drink ticket.

A limited session on Friday afternoon, Oct. 4 from noon to 4 p.m. will not have live entertainment and tickets cost $15.

You can buy tickets on Eventbrite .

It’s tea time at Mill’s Tavern , 101 North Main S., Providence. The first of three Afternoon Tea at the Tavern is Sunday, Sept. 29 from 1 to 4 p.m. It features a selection of teas from Harney & Sons tea. There will be twists on sweet and savory classic afternoon tea items, including savory finger sandwiches, scones, and confections inspired by the season. There will also be tea service on Sunday, Oct. 27 and Friday, Dec. 8. The cost is $45 per person, tax and gratuity are additional. Call (401)-272-3331 or email info@millstavernrestaurant.com for reservations.

USA Today Wine & Food Experience

I'm reminding you about USA Today's Food & Wine Experience on Saturday, Sept. 28, which will feature great local restaurants, breweries and local makers. They will be on hand to deliver their signature food and drink samples for this 21-plus event held under a tent at the 195 District Park in Providence.

The event is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. with early-entry tickets starting at noon. General admission tickets are $65 and early admission at noon is $75. Go to wineandfood.usatoday.com/providence/ to purchase tickets. Use the code GAIL10 to save $10 on those ticket prices.

Some of my favorites will be there including chef Brian Kingsford from Bacaro and Otra, both in Providence; Matunuck Oyster's amazing local product from South Kingstown; samples from the DeQuattro Restaurant Group which includes Il Massimo and the Crow's Nest; and Dunes Brothers Seafood.

Also on hand from Providence will be Moonshine Alley, Durk's Bar-B-Q, the Patio on Broadway, Hemenway's, GPub and the Flatbread Company. The Guild beers will be there and the wines of Sakonnet Vineyards. The Biscotti Cart will also be in attendance.
