PROVIDENCE − A 41-year-old Providence man appeared Thursday in District Court to face a murder charge in the death of a 57-year-old who was found severely injured in a home on Westminster Street.

Almost no detail was read into the record during Michael Shaw's arraignment before District Court Judge Stephen M. Isherwood.

Shaw faces a charge of first-degree murder in the death of Michael Ames.

Ames was found fatally injured when police officers went to 1315-1317 Westminister St. at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, police say.

In January, Shaw was identified as a "habitual offender" when he was charged with four counts of larceny.

The criminal complaints accuse him of stealing from Walgreen's on Atwells Avenue on three different days. Shaw took coffee on Dec. 1; five six-packs of Monster Energy drink on Dec. 8; and Campbell's soup, two six-packs of Red Bull energy drink on Jan. 3, as well as a half-gallon of milk.

Isherwood ordered Shaw held without bail. He told Shaw that the Superior Court will hold a "combined" hearing on his bail and his violation of bail conditions set by the court after he was arrested in the other matters earlier this year. No court date was scheduled.
