This 102-year-old from SK is still going strong

    By Will Richmond, Providence Journal,

Good morning, I'm Will Richmond at The Providence Journal and this is the Daily Briefing.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the USA Today Food and Wine Event on Saturday at the District 195 Park.

It was great to meet readers, introduce some people to The Providence Journal app, and try some great food – those crispy duck meatballs from The Patio and the pork belly from Durk's were among my favorites.

We had some great weather and I'm already looking forward to doing it again next year.

Now on to this morning's latest news.

    • Many among us probably have regrets that we didn't tell someone how we felt about them before they died. After they pass, the kind words flow. The remembrances of the legacy they left or the people they touched become part of their story, but unfortunately, they aren't around to hear it.

That won't be the case for Tony Faella.

A few weeks ago Journal contributor Frank Lennon I received a letter from Betty Faella. "In beautiful and steady handwriting, she began, 'We see articles about WWII veterans when they die. How about my husband, Tony, who is still living? He’s 102!'" Lennon writes.

A later visit to their South Kingstown home gave Frank even more insight into Faella, who was a World War II veteran of the submarine service, having participated in the last five Pacific war patrols of the USS Spearfish and then returned home to become and educator – including serving as the principal of my elementary school when I was in the first grade.

Find out more about Tony Faella's remarkable life in this week's Veteran's Voice.

    • There aren't many local races this election season generating buzz, but a battle for the mayor's seat between independent incumbent Frank Picozzi and Democrat Leah Hazelwood is heating up.

In this week's Political Scene, The Journal's Patrick Anderson introduces readers to the challenger, why she's running and how Picozzi is responding.

    • Name, Image and Likeness – also known as NIL – is changing college sports. Whether it will be for the better we'll have to wait to see, but what does it mean for Rhode Island's colleges and universities playing Division I sports?

The Journal's Bill Koch caught up with basketball coaches and athletic directors to find out.

    • Who is the Providence Journal Student of the Week? It's not an easy choice, but your vote will help determine who comes out on top.
