A Pueblo man arrested in May on suspicion of trying to rob a park ranger and using knives to menace a Pueblo police officer at Ray Aguilera Park allegedly assaulted two deputies at the Pueblo County jail Aug. 10.

James Gilbert, 42, was in the Pueblo County Detention Center when he allegedly assaulted the two deputies working the graveyard shift on the maximum-security floor inside the jail, according to a Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office news release.

One deputy was transported to a local hospital with serious bodily injuries from the alleged assault and another sustained minor injuries to his face, according to the release. The deputy who suffered the serious injuries has since been discharged from the hospital and is “doing well,” a PCSO spokesperson told the Chieftain .

Whether Gilbert will face additional charges for the alleged assaults is still unclear. The incident remains under investigation.

Gilbert was arrested and booked into the jail May 8 after Pueblo police responded to Ray Aguilera Park on a report of a man with a large stick “running up to people, harassing them and yelling and screaming,” according to a Pueblo Police Department news release.

A Pueblo police officer arrived at the scene and learned that the suspect had attempted to rob a park ranger who’d observed his behavior and yelled at him to stop.

The suspect, later identified as Gilbert, “approached the ranger with a knife in his hand demanding money,” according to the release. The park ranger then pepper-sprayed Gilbert, at which point Gilbert walked away.

The responding Pueblo PD officer approached Gilbert and commanded him to stop, at which point Gilbert allegedly turned around approximately 20 feet away from the officer and “presented two knives (one in each hand) while staring at her,” according to the release.

“The officer chose not to engage the male due to the amount of people in the area,” Pueblo PD officials said in the release.

Gilbert then walked away from the park where several additional officers took him into custody.

He was booked into Pueblo County Detention Center on suspicion of criminal attempt, attempted aggravated robbery, a class 3 felony, and real or simulated menacing, a class 5 felony.
