Editor's note: This story was updated Aug. 23 to reflect that southbound Interstate 25 has reopened.

An early morning crash on southbound Interstate 25 involving a Fort Carson military convoy shut down the highway north of Pueblo for several hours Aug. 23, but the highway reopened around 10 a.m., according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The crash occurred around shortly before 4 a.m. Friday morning, according to CSP's public affairs office, when a 2007 Ford Expedition rear-ended a military Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) with a trailer while allegedly exceeding the posted 75 mph speed limit, according to CSP officials.

The JLTV, which was part of a Fort Carson military convoy, rolled onto its top and came to rest in the center median along with its trailer.

A JLTV is a light tactical wheeled vehicle used by the U.S. Army and Marine Corps to support military operations.

The Expedition also came to rest in the center median on its wheels. All four soldiers self-extricated from the JLTV and rendered aid to the three occupants of the Explorer, who sustained serious injuries from the crash, according to CSP.

The soldiers were taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure, while all three occupants of the Expedition were also taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.

The driver of the Expedition, a 29-year-old man from Denver, is being investigated for impairment, according to CSP. Possible charges in the crash will be filed upon the conclusion of the investigation and the return of chemical test results.

Immediately after the wreck, the left southbound lane of I-25 was closed due to debris, but troopers then shut down all southbound lanes for investigation and clean-up, according to CSP. During the approximately six-hour shutdown, southbound traffic was diverted off the interstate at exit 108 and returned to the freeway at 104.

Fort Carson confirmed the military vehicle and injured personnel were from its post. The soldiers operating the JLTV were from the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team and were en route to Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site for a "distributed training exercise that enables units across 4th Infantry Division to train for large-scale combat operations," according to Fort Carson officials.
