On a brisk Thursday night at Dutch Clark Stadium, the Pueblo East Eagles played host to the Sierra Stallions to open up their league schedule.

In a game that would be decided quickly, the Eagles soared past the Stallions by a score of 56-0. They were led by wide receiver Izaiah Trujillo who hauled in three touchdown passes.

“I thought my team was fired up and ready to go,” said head coach Tony Valdez about his team’s performance against Sierra.

“We told them that we set the bar high last week at Holy Family and so we wanted to stick to those expectations and just keep rocking and rolling. Play fast and very physical and they came out and they played well tonight.”

Dolphka Lewis opened the game up with a pair of long touchdown passes to Trujillo to put the Eagles up 14-0.

Isaiah Garcia got in on the scoring as well as Lewis, who ran it in on the quarterback sneak to take a 28-point lead.

“It's always nice to reward those underclassmen, those guys that have been in a backup role throughout the course of this year,” Valdez said. “Sometimes they may not be able to get playing time, but they've earned the right to be on the field and they've done a very good job.

"As far as the depth of the team, that's one of the things that we held our hat on. It's not just one guy over here. We have a plethora of Eagles that could fly around.”

Elijah Contreras scored shortly after the second quarter began -- a few minutes later, Trujillo hauled in his third touchdown of the game.

“I saw us playing as a team,” senior leader MJ Delgado said. “The 'ones' did their job, and got the shutout in the first half, the 'twos' we told them to be as good as the 'ones' and they came out and balled out, finished the shutout. We finished the game, and now we are going on to Central.”

The Eagles (4-2) have a tough game next week against league-foe Pueblo Central.

“This is a league title game. There's no way around it,” Valdez said. “They got us last year for the first time in 15 years and it's been burning ever since, and we want to get back with these guys. We want to 'W' next Friday for a league title."
