Two juveniles have been arrested after officials say they lit fireworks that caused a vegetation and structure fire Wednesday afternoon near a set of railroad tracks by the GMD Electric building in the 700 block of 30th Street in Springfield.

The Eugene-Springfield Fire Department responded to the fire around 4:30 p.m. Crews arrived at the scene to what was eventually deemed a second-alarm incident due to the fire burning the side of a storage structure and in the nearby vegetation.

Firefighters were able to quickly contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures.

According to the department, crews had the scene under control and in a mop-up phase by 5:47 p.m. A section of the building was burned, although the extent of the damage was unclear.

It was the latest in a series of fires this summer that officials have attributed to fireworks. Last week, the parking lot atop Skinner Butte was closed after fireworks-related fires and rising worries about more. City officials have reported a large increase in the number of fireworks-related calls this year.
