Is your Oregon hospital among best, worst? Check list of latest federal quality ratings

Corrections and Clarifications: This story has been updated to clarify that the ratings cited were based on patient experience surveys, and to include a link to a USA Today story to learn more.

Oregon's hospitals received middling scores in the latest ratings from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

In a patient survey of the 61 hospitals, only one hospital received five stars, the highest rating. Twenty-three Oregon hospitals received four stars, 21 were rated three stars, one earned two stars and none were graded one star. Fifteen hospitals went unrated, most for not having enough patients to survey.

The patient survey is developed from a patient experience of care survey called the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. The survey asks a random sample of recently discharged patients about their hospital care experience, and measures, including communication with doctors and nurses, responsiveness of hospital staff, cleanliness of the hospital, quietness of the hospital, communication about medicines, discharge information, care transition, overall rating of hospital and willingness to recommend hospital.

In Lane County, PeaceHealth's now-closed hospital in Eugene and its medical center in Cottage Grove both went unrated for not having enough patients to survey. University District, which had been diverting patients to Springfield even before closing, last received a score in July 2021, where it received a 3-star rating. Both hospitals in Springfield earned 3-star ratings, and the Peace Harbor Medical Center in Florence earned four stars.

In Marion County, Salem Hospital earned three stars, the outlying hospitals in Stayton and Silverton each earned four-store ratings. Polk County's West Valley Hospital did not have enough patients surveyed to rate.

    Not rated

Fifteen Oregon hospitals were not rated in the survey, which was last updated on July 31. Thirteen of those hospitals were not rated because not enough patients completed surveys of their experience:

    • Blue Mountain Hospital, John Day
    • Coquille Valley Hospital
    • Harney District Hospital, Burns
    • Lake District Hospital
    • Lower Umpqua Hospital District, Reedsport
    • PeaceHealth Cottage Grove Community Medical Center
    • Pioneer Memorial Hospital (Heppner)
    • Sacred Heart University District, Eugene
    • Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center, Bandon
    • St. Charles Madras
    • St. Alphonsus Medical Center - Baker City
    • Wallowa Memorial Hospital, Enterprise
    • West Valley Hospital, Dallas

The other two unrated hospitals were Shriner's Hospital for Children in Portland (specialized hospitals generally don't participate in this quality reporting program) and the VA Roseburg Healthcare System where "results are not available for this reporting period."

Oregon's top-rated hospital, Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, expanded last fall with a new clinic in Sweet Home but also found itself in controversy in December over dismissing a pediatrician.

Oregon's lowest-rated hospital, which the feds list as Mid-Columbia Medical Center but has since been renamed Adventist Health Columbia Gorge, was sold to Adventist in August 2022. Adventist has made public progress since adding 22 staff in six months and opening an anti-poverty resource hub. Oregon Health Authority recently announced that is seeking public comment on the results of the merger.

Hospitals suck because they are being run by the insurance companies. I know I can’t get proper treatment. I’ve had burning itchy eyes with a rash for over a month. The doctor I was referred to told me to see my assigned dr. That’s another month out. My dr will only see me for one thing. The trash has spread to my face and body. That’s two more things.
