JACKSON TWP. – Hund Construction Inc. isn't holding back on its political views, with the latest sign posted outside the business causing controversy.

The company is known for using its changeable sign to criticize political stances and politicians, garnering both praise and disdain in online reviews over the last several years.

The latest one, with the American flag hanging next to it, takes a swipe at Democratic presidential candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris.

It reads: "Kamala has been on more wieners than Heinz Ketchup."

Owner Brad Hund defended the sign when the Canton Repository visited the business this week, saying he's been making them since 2020. His first sign focused on the COVID-19 pandemic. It referred to the disease as the "China virus," suggested it was "man made" and pushed by the media.

Hund said the feedback that he's received has been mostly positive, and his messages are critical of both parties.

"I don't expect anybody to agree with my views, but I don't mind disagreement," he said. "I've had far more positive (comments) than negative, probably 4 to 1 at least."

Hund said he doesn't believe the government represents the people it's suppposed to serve.

"I think our government today represents only themselves, and the financial benefit of only themselves on the backs of we the people," he said. "And I think that's sad."

'This sign is way beyond exceptionally offensive and disrespectful'

Not everyone thinks the signs are funny.

Green resident Stan Levenger said he drives by the business often, and though he aligns independent politically, he found the current sign offensive.

"I feel that this sign is way beyond exceptionally offensive and disrespectful to the vice president position and all women in general," he said. "This isn't just political; this is an attack on the female sex in my opinion."

Levenger said that no matter who someone supports, there has to be a respect for elected officials.

"I think the sign is tantamount to a very serious undemocratic attack on the political system," he said. "Why can't we just stick to promoting our candidate and not disrespecting our opponents?"

Causing discord, Levenger said, is not in the best interest of anyone, no matter what your political views are.

"This would be the kind of thing 20 years ago that might've been said in a locker room," he said.

'The highlight of my week is the Hund Construction sign on the way home from work.'

Past signs have included the messages "Why are college professors chanting death to America?" and "Joe Biden is more confused than Michelle Obama's gynecologist."

Google reviews show the business has supporters.

"The highlight of my week is the Hund Construction sign on the way home from work! Wake up!!" one reviewer wrote a year ago.

"LOVE LOVE LOVE a true American company who speaks the truth. Keep up the great work," another review says.

Not all reviews are supportive, though.

"Any company that has poor enough judgment to use their presence to promote divisive political and social messages clearly has no basic understanding of good business practices," said one review written two years ago.

"Really poor taste in signage. Clearly a large sector of society is unwelcome," reads another.

Hund said a lot of the reviews online are inaccurate, as many have claimed to have met him or his staff in person and that they were disrespectful. He said these interactions didn't happen.

"There's a bunch of stuff out there, good and bad," he said. "To blatantly lie like a couple of these people are, I guess it just shows their character."
