CANTON − The Stark County Sheriff's Office is planning a memorial checkpoint Thursday evening to honor the memory of a motorist killed by a drunken driver in 2022.

A statement issued by the sheriff's Safe Communities Coalition did not reveal the location and times for the checkpoint. An email seeking more information was sent to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office said it will start its event at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Faith Community Fellowship at 1303 Ninth St. SW in Massillon. The motorist killed on July 16, 2022, was Douglas B. Fahrni, 62, of Apple Creek . He was driving west on U.S. 30 in Tuscarawas Township when an intoxicated driver going east crossed into his lane and collided with his vehicle.

Franco Guidone, 32 of Louisville, who drove the other vehicle, pleaded no contest in June 2023 to two counts of felony aggravated vehicular homicide and the misdemeanor of driving under the influence of alcohol. Stark County Common Pleas Judge Taryn Heath sentenced him to four to six years in prison with a chance of judicial release after three years.
