Former Canton City Schools custodian pleads guilty to stealing $22,240 from his union

CANTON ‒ A man who worked as a Canton City Schools custodian has pleaded guilty to stealing $22,240 from his union.

Eric M. Snyder, 44, entered his plea to grand theft on Wednesday in Stark County Common Pleas Court. Judge Kristin G. Farmer dismissed a charge of telecommunications fraud.

The Sherrodsville resident stole from Local 107 of the Ohio Association of Public School Employees between June 1, 2022, and May 17, 2024. The complaint filed by Canton police in Canton Municipal Court said he transferred money from the victim's business account to his personal account.

The Board of Education accepted Snyder's resignation on July 15. It was effective Aug. 8.

Superintendent Jeff Talbert has said he would not comment because the case is not a school district issue, leaving unanswered questions about Snyder's tenure and assignments.

An Aug. 18, 2021, post on the district's Facebook page said Snyder was a fireman/custodian at Youtz Intermediate School.

Snyder's sentencing will occur after a restitution hearing that is scheduled for Sept. 5.

A message seeking comment was sent to Snyder's attorney on Thursday.
