CANTON ‒ A motorist hit a Canton Fire Department ambulance Thursday night on Tuscarawas Street W at Interstate 77, according to investigators.

The driver of the private vehicle was trying to turn left in front of the eastbound ambulance from the freeway's southbound exit ramp, Canton Fire Department Division Chief Steven Henderson said.

The passenger vehicle, a Jeep, hit the front driver's side of the medic unit.

The ambulance was responding with lights, sirens and horn in use. It was traveling from Aultman Hospital to respond to a call from Alan Page Drive SE.

Henderson said the intersection appeared clear before the medic unit entered it.

He said the driver of the Jeep was cited.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was unable to confirm the citation on Friday, when the accident remained under investigation. A dispatcher said the collision was reported at 11:40 p.m. Thursday.

The highway patrol said the driver of the Jeep was taken to Aultman Hospital.

The medics reported no injury. They wore seat belts, Henderson said.
