SANDY TWP. ‒ Two adults and four dogs lost their home in a fire Sunday afternoon at 7405 Brookford Ave. SE, north of Waynesburg.

Mohawk Valley Fire Chief James Marraccini said the cause of the fire is undetermined. It started in a bedroom in the northwest corner of the ranch house.

He said firefighters were called at 2:17 p.m. and arrived in less than 11 minutes to find fire showing on three sides of the house. The occupants were outside.

The fire chief said sound of the fire woke the residents, indicating it had advanced before they noticed it. They looked throughout the house before finding the fire.

"They opened up a door and the room was fully ablaze, (fire) had spread already up into the attic area," Marraccini said. "And by the time they walked out the door, they had fire coming out of the attic area on both ends and out of the entire northwest corner of the house."

Marraccini said the structure is a total loss.

It took firefighters 40 minutes to get the fire under control. They left the scene around 6:25 p.m.

The American Red Cross was going to help the residents with temporary shelter.
