Ohioans looking for a good scare this fall likely can find one in their own backyard.
The Haunted Attraction Association has certified 50 haunted attractions across the country as "Top Haunts ," and five destinations in Ohio made the list.
Three of the five are in Northeast Ohio in Akron, Canton and Columbia Station, with the other two in Sandusky and Cincinnati.
So what's it take to be designated as a "Top Haunt?" For starters, haunted attractions must be a member of the association. They also must meet 10 criteria, including protecting customers, promoting haunted attractions, and educating industry experts and employees.
“Based on the consumer index data, and our own association trending data, the world loves this time of year and is excited to attend haunted houses this fall,” association President Spencer Terry, who runs the Fear Factory Haunted Attraction in Salt Lake City, said in a prepared statement. "That said, visitor safety will always be the No. 1 priority of our industry, even before thrills and scares."
