JACKSON TWP. — The big lefty is a big catch for Ohio State baseball .

The Buckeyes and head coach Justin Haire landed a verbal commitment from Jackson High School pitcher Landon Thiel on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-7 Thiel went 7-2 this past spring as a sophomore, helping the Polars win a district championship and a share of the Federal League championship. Thiel sported a 1.83 ERA and struck out 69 batters in 42 innings. Opponents batted .188 off him.

"I'm excited to announce that I will be furthering my academic and athletic career at THE Ohio State University," Thiel said on social media. "I'd like to thank my parents and family, Coach (Bill) Gamble and all of my other coaches and teammates at Jackson, Coach (Brion) Treadway, Coach (John) Sullivan and everyone else who has helped me get to this point. I'd like to thank Coach Haire and his coaching staff for this opportunity. GO BUCKS."

Thiel, who also plays basketball for Jackson, is ranked seventh in Ohio and 257th nationally in the Class of 2026 by Prep Baseball Report. He threw an 82-pitch no-hitter against Walsh Jesuit on April 19. He owns a 12-2 record in two varsity seasons.

Thiel is set to join local product Brady Rollyson of Green on the Buckeyes roster. Alliance's Gavin Bruni was drafted out of Ohio State by the Washington Nationals in the 17th round this past July.
