For many, Massillon is the most storied high school football program in Ohio with 25 state titles and 952 wins all-time.
The Tigers are meeting a team from Maryland this week in DeMatha Catholic that has made some history of its own. The Stags have a storied head coach and no shortage of Division I college recruits on the roster.
Here are some interesting notes on the DeMatha program and a look at the top players from the team set to play at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium on Friday.
A look at DeMatha Catholic football
Bill McGregor part of exclusive Maryland high school football club
You'd be hard pressed to find a head coach with more solid credentials than Bill McGregor. McGregor has posted an incredible 315 career wins. He became just the fourth high school head coach in Maryland history to surpass 300 wins when he accomplished that feat in 2022. McGregor has also helped more than 375 players earn Division I college scholarships as head coach at DeMatha.
Super Bowl Stags
DeMatha Catholic had two players win Super Bowls in recent years. Current Cleveland Browns safety Rodney McLeod (DeMatha Class of 2008) earned a ring with the Philadelphia Eagles while John Lovett (Class of 2014) picked up a ring with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Big time Buckeye
Former star Ohio State pass rusher Chase Young is a 2017 DeMatha Catholic grad. Young was the No. 2 pick in the 2020 NFL draft by Washington. He signed with the New Orleans Saints before the start of the 2024 season.
Penn State football recruit LaVar Keys among several DeMatha Division I college prospects
From the skill positions to defensive playmakers to the big men up front, assorted DeMatha players are drawing plenty of interest from college football programs. Here's a look at the Stags drawing the most college interest:
- A solid line: DeMatha Catholic is anchored by Aiden Smith along the offensive line. The 6-foot-3, 290 pound Smith has Division I offers from Maine among others. He is versatile and can play either center or guard. He also plays along the defensive line for DeMatha. Tackles Zion Smith (6-5, 300) and Anthony Chuman (6-1, 300) both have offers from Syracuse.
- Big-time linebackers: Both Jermaine Minnis (Ohio University) and Noah Chambers (Virginia Tech) have verbally committed to Division I schools. Minnis (6-1, 210) also had offers from Massachusetts, Boston College, Pittsburgh and Syracuse. Chambers (6-2, 216) also was recruited by Maryland, Boston College, Charlotte and Pittsburgh. Expect this pair to be extremely physical.
- Speed on the outside: Wide receiver LaVar Keys is known for his speed. He was timed at 4.37 in the 40-yard dash. Keys is a crisp route runner and constant deep threat. The 5-11, 165-pound Keys committed to Penn State after also receiving offers from Boston College, East Carolina, Marshall and Maryland.
- Balance on offense: DeMatha has two Division I-caliber running backs — Bud Coombs (5-10, 195) and Elijah Lee (6-0, 200). Coombs is a four-star recruit that has verbally committed to Maryland while Lee was recently offered by Illinois. Both are big, bruising, physical backs that can chew up yards after contact if you allow them to do so.
- Dual threat: QB Denzel Gardner (6-0, 185) is a Marshall recruit with blazing speed when he runs the ball. He also can push the ball downfield with his arm. Gardner is a matchup nightmare for most teams he runs across.
