A 32-year-old Beach City man is accused of leaving an accident scene after crashing into a horse-driven buggy.

The suspect was in the Stark County Jail on Monday, charged with four offenses.

A woman, a teen and a baby from the buggy were taken to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries suffered in the crash that occurred Saturday night in Brewster.

Beach City police Officer James Dunnivan is credited with catching the motorist after the driver ran through a stop sign at Third Avenue SW and Redwood Street.

"My officer observed the vehicle with hazards on, with damage," said Beach City Police Chief Curt Gipe said. "It appeared that the internal side airbags had deployed. That's what piqued his attention and then he ran the stop sign right in front of my officer."

Gipe wrote on the department's Facebook page that the driver admitted to the hit-skip and was taken into custody before being turned over to Brewster police.

"Nice job Officer Dunnivan for the Great work on this!!" Gipe wrote.

The crash occurred in the 300 block of North Wabash Avenue at approximately 8 p.m., Brewster Police Chief Nathan Taylor said in a prepared statement. He said the buggy victims' ages are 38, 15 and 1.

The crash remained under investigation Monday afternoon.

In addition to the Beach City citation for the stop sign violation, the suspect is charged in Massillon Municipal Court with failing to stop after an accident and three counts of vehicular assault. He was arraigned Monday. A preliminary hearing on the felony charges is scheduled for Oct. 7.
