HAMLET — Another summer of Hamlet American Legion baseball is on the horizon.

With the anticipation of the new campaign, the fourth season since the program’s resurgence in 2021, this year’s tryout date has been set.

Head coach Chip Gordon, who’s skippered the program the last three years, announced that Hamlet Post 49 will hold its senior team tryout Saturday, April 27, at noon.

The pro-style tryout will be held at Memorial Park in Hamlet, the site of Post 49’s home games.

New this season, Hamlet will field a senior team and junior team. Saturday’s tryout is for the senior team only. The junior team held its tryout earlier this month.

Hamlet is looking to add players who are rising high school sophomores to first-year college players (who don’t turn 20 in 2024, even after the season).

Post 49’s tryout is open to eligible players from Richmond, Marlboro, Moore and Scotland counties.

There are several open roster spots on the senior team following the aging out of several players from last year’s playoff team.

Gordon emphasized that there is no cost to players or their families to play for Hamlet Post 49.

“Any player who is interested in playing for Hamlet must be at the tryout Saturday,” Gordon said.

Helping Gordon with the tryout will be assistant coaches Anthony Hailey, Chaz Sessoms and Kevin Wallace. Other coaches involved with the program this year will be Bryce Dixon, Scott McInnis and Robert Smith.

For more information, contact head coach Chip Gordon at 910-995-2496.

The Richmond Observer will continue its coverage of Hamlet Post 49 baseball this spring and summer.
