ROCKINGHAM — The final edition of The Richmond Observer’s weekly feature series of the 2023-24 school year highlights a pair of Richmond Senior High School soccer players.

Junior goalkeeper Quanna Bostic and senior center midfielder Gabby Lutz have been named the Official Richmond County Female Student-Athletes of the Week presented by Rockingham NC Self Storage.

The Lady Raider soccer team made its return to the NCHSAA 4A East state playoffs this week after missing out the past two years. Bostic and Lutz’s efforts were instrumental in getting Richmond there, as well as remaining competitive against one of the state’s top seeds.

Both three-year varsity starters, Bostic earned her third career recognition and her second this season. Lutz closed her career with her first career honor.

“CLASSROOM CREDITS” WITH QUANNA BOSTIC AND GABBY LUTZ

With the school year winding down, both Lady Raiders are drawing a close on a busy semester. Lutz is set to graduate with the class of 2024 in three weeks.

Taking dual-enrollment classes at Richmond Community College and AP courses at Richmond Senior, Lutz has been in five classes in both semesters during her senior year. Her current weighted GPA is a 4.65.

A member of senior senate (public relations officer), Beta Club, NHS and the FFA, Lutz took three courses at RichmondCC in the fall — American Sign Language 111, English 112 and Philosophy 240, all of which she earned college credit for. At Richmond, she earned As in AP Literature and AP Music Theory.

This spring, Lutz is in American Sign Language 112 and Business 110 at the college. She’s taking Economics and Personal Finance Honors, Junior Leadership Honors and Vocal Music Advanced at Richmond, with her mother Lauren Lutz serving as her teacher.

“I will be going to UNC Chapel Hill and major in political science,” Lutz said. “I want to go into law or law making. I’ve been a lifelong fan of UNC and when I visit it feels like home. My greatest academic achievement has been going to Governor’s School to study English.

“Having my mom as my chorus teacher is something I’ve enjoyed a lot. There’s a line between being a teacher and a parent, and sometimes that’s a little challenging, but we’ve managed it well.”

Also a dual-enrollment student-athlete, Bostic has taken classes at Richmond Senior and Richmond Community College both semesters. Her current weighted GPA is a 3.75.

During the fall, Bostic made the A/B honor roll across her four classes between Richmond and RichmondCC. They were English III Honors (A), Health Science II (A), Spanish 111 (B) and Sociology 210 (A).

This spring, Bostic is taking three classes at Richmond — Chemistry Honors, Civic Literacy Honors and Math 3. At RichmondCC, she’s taking Spanish 112. Bostic is currently a member of the HOSA Club and Raider Diamond Club, and hopes to expand on that.

“My favorite class this semester has been Civics,” Bostic said. “But my most challenging class has been chemistry. That class takes a lot of time and focus. I’ve got an 80 in there and I’m hoping to hang on.

“My biggest academic goal next year, besides keeping my grades up, is to get into the National Honor Society.”

“ON THE PITCH” WITH QUANNA BOSTIC AND GABBY LUTZ

The Richmond girls soccer team made it back to the NCHSAA 4A state playoffs this spring for the first time since the 2021 season.

Leading up to Monday’s first round match at No. 2 Millbrook Magnet High School, Bostic and Lutz helped the Lady Raiders to the semifinal round of the Sandhills Athletic Conference tournament.

Bostic recorded a 6-0 shutout win against Southern Lee High School in the first round of the SAC tournament, with Lutz setting the team’s pace in the middle of the field and controlling both sides of the attack.

During Monday’s playoff match, No. 31 Richmond suffered a 6-0 loss to the Millbrook Lady Wildcats.

While the overall outcome wasn’t what the Lady Raiders wanted, Bostic and Lutz both put forth strong performances to keep the match close for the majority of the time.

Millbrook scored in the opening minute of the match, but the next 39 minutes were held together by Bostic and Lutz, among others.

Bostic made 19 saves in the first half on 22 shots, while Lutz directed the midfielders and defense and forced Millbrook to take long range shots, which created easier save opportunities for Bostic.

A 3:07 span to start the second half saw the Lady Wildcats open their lead to 4-0 on two set piece goals and a penalty kick on a foul in the box, which was much disputed by Richmond.

Bostic and Lutz continued to let their presence be known, as Bostic finished the match with an impressive 38 saves on 51 total shots faced.

In the closing minutes, Lutz made a goal-saving play to keep the score at 6-0. Bostic made a charge on a ball but it was flipped over her head and rolled quickly toward a wide open net.

Lutz, who was also crashing the box, harnessed her speed and raced after the ball. Getting to the goal at the same time as the ball, Lutz made a sweeping kick to her right to save the goal and clear out the danger zone.

As the clock wound down, Lutz and fellow senior teammate Evie Howell were called off one last time during their career to the cheers of parents and fans. Bostic made a few more quality saves in arguably the best performance of her career.
